I am unable to attend the public hearing on the Gov, t
Robert Lucas Square, but I would appreciate it if the following
remarks could be made a part of the record of the hearing.

Iowa City has been a very pleasant place for our family. ;
We have appreciated its attractiveness, its efficient city services,
its liveliness, and its friendliness. In view of these things,
I was disappointed in the design of ;the proposed Robert Lucas
Square. As one o£ the Focal points of the, city, I felt the
square should somehow express the quality of life we have enjoyed
here. 'Instead, I saa a set of concrete steps, reminiscent of the
app reaoches to'' an Aztec pyramid, topped by three pipes, which
t'
look like nothing more than unfinished, unenclosed plumbing.
I realize that a,town our size may not have the resources to
undertake something stunning, awe-inspiring or monumental. But
'i
couldn't we have a little gracefulness ? Something that blends '
the old and new of Iowa City a.little better ?:Something that
expresses a little more of the flavor of this particular community ?

Something that won't make it look like urban renewal is still in

progress 20 years 'from now?
Frankly, though falling water is both beautiful and restful,
I feel the square would be both more attractive and more appropriate
the steps and pipes and with only the trees and benches.
