Thank you for your involvement with the Johnson County Board of
Supervisors Youth Development Policy Board. This Board was originally
set up to support a grant which provided funding for seven local agencies.
The funding is now a combination of state and local dollars. The Board
serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors. Please call or e-

Youth Leadership
Program
Goals & Outcomes
Leadership is an important asset for community strength. The young
people of this area should be taught about leadership and actively
engaged in leadership activities as a valuable resource in furthering
the community.
The goals ofthis program are to educate young people about our
community; to educate young people about leadership; and to engage
young people in community involvement.
The intended outcomes of this program are to promote the values of
leadership and community involvement; to create future leaders in
our commtmity; to create relationships between youth and local
businesses and organizations; and to promote the strength of the Iowa
City area.
Program
The program will consist of an opening orientation followed by a
weekend retreat. After the retreat there will be 7 full-day sessions
from September through April with a service project and graduation
ceremony in April. The first phase of the program will consist of 3
full-day sessions including panels, tours, and activities to explore the
topics of agriculture, arts & culture, community economics,
education, health care, human services, and local government.
The second phase will consist of 4 full-day sessions using a
curriculum based on the nationally recognized Points of Light Youth
Leadership Institute. It will include teanl building activities,
introduction to community service, discussion of diversity, leadership
building activities, and a community scrvice project.
The programs will be hosted at a variety of community sites. Adult
leaders in the community will bc guest participants and facilitators.
Program Dates:
Orientation
Wednesday, August 17,20055:30-6:30 p.m.
Students and their parents will be given detailed infornlation about
the Youth Leadership Program. Classmates will be given an
opportunity to interact with each other and to be involved in an
activity.
Opening Retreat
Saturday, August 27 through Sunday, August 28,2005
This overnight retreat serves as an introduction to the program year. It

will begin on Saturday morning and conclude mid afternoon on
Sunday. Activities for the retreat weekend focus on team building,
addressing concepts of community service and creative leadership
process.
The following sessions will introduce students to the corresponding
topics in their own community. There will be panel discussions with
community leaders, tours of local facilities, and activities associated
with each so students can explore the topics in detail.

making, nor is there a guarantee you will make the right decision.
Students learn how to work with each other when each makes a
different decision based on the same scenario.

Students and their parents are invited to attend a graduation session
where students will be presented with a certificate of completion of
the Youth Leadcrship Program.
Participants
The class is intended to be a diverse group of 22-25 young men and
women from the Johnson County area. Six students will be chosen
from City and West High Schools, and two from each of the
following: Regina, Clear Creek Amana, Solon, Lone Tree, and the
area alternative High Schools. The balance will be at-large. Students

will apply in the spring of their sophomore year to participate in their
junior year.
The program is free to the participants; the cost ofthe program is
funded through donations from the community.

Each participant is expected to attend every session. To make sure you do not have unavoidable
contlicts. please compare your schedule with the program dates befare completing your
application. If selected, you must commit to attend all program sessions and the Retreat, which is
a two-day (overnight included) session. If you are unable to make the necessary commitment, it is

INFORMATION FOR THE 2006.07 APPLICANT
Review the following information before completing your
application form, particularly the dates for the program sessions.
100% attendance at all program seSsions is expected, so please
make sure that you do not have any conflicts with these dates
before applying. Situations that arise will be dealt with at that
time.
COST:
The program is FREE to participants who meet eligibility
ELIGIBILITY:
Sophomores who attend public and parochial schools in the
Johnson County area. Inferested students should:
U Demonstrate leadership in school and/or community
activities
U Express and interest in furthering their knowledge of the
Johnson County area
U Commit 100% attendance at all sessions
U Receive a recommendation from their principal or counselor
and approval to participate
APPLICATION CHECKLIST
.. Fill out the application form completely and return it to the
Community Youth Leadership Program, Iowa City Chamber of
Commerce, 325 E. Washington St., Iowa City, lA, 52240.
UGive one reference form to your principal or counselor and
the second one to a teacher or another adult who knows you
well. If this is your first year at your currenl school. give the
second reference to a teacher, principal or counselor at the
school you attended last year.

SELECTION PROCESS
Using the objectives of the Youth leadership Program, the
Selection committee will review all applications and select the
class of approximately 18.20 participants.
All applicants will be notified in writing of the Selection
Committee's decision in June, 2006. Applications will remain
confidential.
THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS MAY 15, 2006.
PROGRAM:
The Program will consist of an opening orientation followed by a
weekend retreat in August. After the retreat there will be six full
day sessions from September through February with a service
project and graduation ceremony in April.
The program will consist of sessions including panels. tours, and
activities to explore the topics of arts & culture, Corridor
economics, health core, human services, and local
government. These sessions will include activities and discussion
following a curriculum based on the nationally recognized
Points of Ught Leadership Program focusing on aspects of
creative leadership.
After acceptance to the program, students and parents will
attend on orientation day which will explain the year. Then
each month, participants will receive a packet to arrive in the
mail with information regarding location, agenda and
presenters to prepare for the best possible experience out of
the day.
AnENDANCE:
Program participants must agree to attend ALL program days.
Attendance Issues that arise will be dealt with on an IndIvidual
basls.
ORIENTATION
DATE: August 14, 2006
Youth and par,nts will have the opportunity 10 meet each
other and the Chamber committee members at this
informational raception. Attendance is important as final retreat
information will be shared..
RETREAT
DATE: August 26 & 27, 2006
This overnight retreat beginning al 1 :00 p.m. Saturday and
concluding at .$:00 p.m. Sunday evening will be filled with team.
building activities, a campfire, and an opportunity to explore
how we view our community. Sleeping bags, flashlights and
campfire storie$ are always on the list of items not to forgetl
BUILDING COMMUNITY
DATE: September 20, 2006
How do we level the playing field for all people living in OUf
community? Topics today include human services in Johnson
County and community organizations.
ECONOMIC VISION
DATE: October 25, 2006
Together we are stronger as one. This statement applies to the
way we promote and look at economics in the greater Corridor
area of Iowa City to Cedar Rapids. We learn about this venture
with the studenfs of the Five Seasons Leadership Program.
THE LIGHT FROM WITHIN
DATE: Novemb,r 14, 2006
Our community does not thrive and shine wifhout the light of
creativity. Topics today include exploring various arts and
cultural organizations and discovering how they impact the
community.
CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY
DATE: December 13, 2006
How do we care for people in our community? Todaywe'JI tour
a hospital and examine specific areas of health care including
forensics.

Mapping our community and setting goals are a big part of the
leadership role. let's reflect on where we are with our social
beliefs and assumptions and how leaders ask questions to open
doors for change.
LIVING LEADERSHIP

Leaders share their message and advocate for a cause.
Coming together today will involve implementation of a
message aboul your experience in the Community Youth
Leadership Program.
