Since then we have produced a website which offers biographical information about members, materials relating to the youth empowerment grant and information regarding the history and formation of the YAC. Since the success of the website and YAC depend on community engagement, we are again requesting funding to advertise. We advertised during fiscal year 2010 by producing flyers, hosting events and purchasing Face book ads. We hope to continue to expand our advertising in FY 2011 by working with a marketing student at the Tippie B. College of Business pro-bono, reaching out to student groups and high schools and developing deeper relationships with community groups that indicate interest in the YAC's mission. Through continued advertising, we hope to increase community awareness and participation in YAC endeavors. Youth Empowerment Grant: $2,000 We were allotted $2,000 for continuing a youth grant program in FY 2010. We have developed an application and process for evaluating and approving youth led projects that benefit Iowa City Residents with funding up to $500. A student outreach group at Regina has continually expressed interest in, and been awarded, a grant for a project geared towards helping needy families during the holidays. With active promotion and targeted information, countless people have the opportunity to be helped by Iowa City youth. Youth Forums: 51,000 The YAC has recently redoubled its efforts to fully live out its mission statement and truly act as a sounding board for issues affecting Iowa City youth. Acting in empowering leadership roles is only a part of that mission, however, and actively seeking out what youth have to say about the issues affecting them is just as important. To that end, the YAC is requesting $1,000 to have on hand when issues (such as the proposed juvenile curfew) arise and we wish to hold a forum to discuss those issues, as well as address the youth community at large. Recoenition Scholarship: 5500 The Recognition Scholarship, $250, will be awarded to two Iowa City Youth who have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to community service. These youth must be Iowa City residents in the seventh or eighth grade (orhome-school equivalent), have to be recommended by at least two teachers and must write, in 500 words or less what "leadership" means to her or him. This scholarship will serve not only to recognize youth for their work thus far, and potential for their futures, but also act as a recruiting tool for the commission itself. By providing funding, this program facilitates positive and constructive youth involvement. Young Iowa City applicants, with a sponsor, will apply for up to $1000 to be used on a project to improve Iowa City. They will complete the application process, present their final proposal to the Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) for approval, and receive notification of the decision. If awarded, they will have until June 30 to complete their project. While benefiting the community, the program empowers youth by providing them with experience useful in nonprofit management, leadership, and grant writing. They will have to design a feasible plan, follow a budget, and complete their project. They will have the support of their sponsor and the YAC, but the success of the project depends solely on the youth. The Youth Empowerment Grant embodies the mission of the Youth Advisory Commission by encouraging meaningful participation in the Iowa City community. clerk/YAC/Youth Empowerment Grant Overview.doc Frequently Asked Questions Who can apply? Washington Street Iowa City, IA 52240 Leadership By Morgan Goedken To me leadership is many things. Leadership is when you are leading someone or something. It is also the act of leading. Most important to me, it is when you set a good example for those who follow you. Leadership is when you take responsibility for something or someone. A leader has to have some qualities. They need to show respect and compassion for what they are doing and what they are leading. They need to be kind. You need to have good self confidence and good self esteem. If you don't believe in yourself it will be hard for others to believe in you. You can't be bossy and that is where the respect comes in. If you are mean and yelling orders at everyone no one is going to like you. You make yourself look like a jerk. You also have to feel compassion for others. If you were put in another person's situation, how would you want to be treated? I have learned leadership throughout my young life. I have learned from my parents, teachers, friends, and even strangers. For them it was an example to show us, the next generation, how to lead. If we didn't have leaders in the world, there would be problems throughout the world. We wouldn't have an organized government any where in the world. Leadership has meant everything in my life. A leader has good character and is considered a role model. I have become the person I have become because of role models. The leaders in my life have shown me how to be respectful and show v 0 a compassion in all the things I do. ° -c w ~. o a 3 .. _. ,r Leadership has definitely affected my decisions. Before I do something I ask myself many questions. Would I want my younger brother to do this? Would I want other kids to do this? Would this affect my character? Would this affect my leadership skills and how people would treat me as a leader? Would it show I am capable of being a leader? Would people trust me as a leader? I try to answer these questions each time I do something. I usually choose the right decision. When I make a mistake I learn from it. I want to show others that if you make a mistake to try to make it right and learn from it. I have made some hard academic decisions. I was asked to take my ACT or my SAT. I didn't know if I was ready. I had enough self confidence to make the decision to do it. I hope that if people know my name they associate it with something good. Good character and leadership can show who a person is. I taught Morgan last year, and she is an exceptional young woman. She has displayed her leadership abilities by excelling inside and outside the classroom. Morgan is one of the best leader I have ever taught. As a student, Morgan works hard in the classroom and takes her academics seriously. She is curious and always willing to ask questions to deepen her understanding of a subject. Morgan leads by example in the classroom ar~d she is not afraid to take the leadership role in groups. She always took up a leadership role during literature circle discussions last year. Morgan would help her group organize itself, make sure that others in the group participated, and kept her group members on task. I always knew that I could trust her as a leader of other students. As a seventh grader, Morgan volunteered to help with our recycling program. Every day she would get permission to leave study hall to stack cardboard boxes from our cafeteria in the recycling bins outside. This is a thankless and unnoticed job, but one that needed to be done everyday. If a teacher needed a volunteer for a project, Morgan would be more than willing to help. Morgan is a very active young woman as well. She plays softball and enjoys outdoor activities like fishing and snowmobiling. Beyond her achievements inside and outside of school, I can attest to Morgan's outstanding character. She is an honest, hard-working, and dedicated individual. She has a kind heart and a great personality. Morgan has a strong sense of friendship and loyalty, which has helped her develop friendships with her peers. In my nine years of teaching, Morgan stands out as a leader. She is one of only a few students I can honestly say has natural leadership ability. This is my second year teaching Morgan, and I must say I thoroughly enjoy having her in class. She is very knowledgeable, kind and not afraid to speak her mind. Morgan is a very faithful young woman. This is very important, because she takes to heart the important teachings of our faith, including respect for others, respect for what others own and respect for the truth. I can clearly see her applying these to her everyday life. Morgan is very inquisitive and good at problem solving. She will not hesitate to ask if she is confused, and she has understood the science and engineering concepts very well. Once she has learned something, she will help others in her group that is still struggling with the concepts. People listen to what she has to say. What has it meant in your life and how has it affected your decisions? By: Michael Sueppel Leadership has many definitions. I believe it is someone who inspires, positively leads, and helps others. Leadership must also include being organized, showing respect, and having self discipline. In Boy Scouts, my goal is to be an Eagle Scout. To get to my goal I have to complete requirements to move up in the ranks. Being a leader and helping others in my troop is a major part in the Boy Scout experience and becoming an Eagle Scout. I do most of this on my own time. It is important to me because I think it will help me be more successful and show I can achieve a goal. From achieving this goal, I can help others who would like to accomplish their goals. Being a leader is not always easy, but it is doing the right thing. Last year in school, I helped a student in 3`d grade. Every day I came in before school to help him get ready for the day. Even though at times it was very frustrating, he often wanted to get off task, I still felt it was important to work with him because I could tell he needed the help. I felt it was the right thing to do and I was happy to do it. He and his mother and teacher were very appreciative of my help. There are different types of leadership. There are those who lead with their words, those who lead by example, and those that lead quietly by doing what is asked of them and showing others how it's done. I consider myself a quiet leader. In school I turn in my work on time, and it is good quality work. I help my friends and classmates with their homework and assignments when I can. My friends say that I am a good role model. I like that my friends trust me and look up to me. The same thing goes for my family. I am the oldest. As the oldest, sometimes it may not be all that fun because there are a lot of responsibilities placed on me, but I am able to be a leader and show leadership to my o brother and sisters. And my parents expect it of me as well. r*~ I want to thank the City of Iowa City Youth Advisory Commission for this ~ opportunity. a Z o~ as t R E G I N A E L E M E N T A R Y 2120 Rochester Ave. Iowa City, IA 52245 (319) 337-5739 November 20, 2010 To Whom It May Concern: It is with pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Michael Sueppel. Michael was a third grader in my classroom from August 2006-May 2007. As an 8-9 year old, Michael was a well organized, self-disciplined, conscientious, and diligent student. Michael showed excellent intellectual promise. He produced high quality work, putting forth his best effort on all assignments. He worked hard to correct his worksheets, understanding his effort would assist him in comprehending the concepts, demonstrating a strong motivation. Michael excelled in third grade. As a third grader, Michael showed a concern for others. He volunteered his time to assist struggling students and was always kind and courteous to his classmates and me. As a sixth grader, Michael gave back to his school by assisting an at-risk boy in my classroom. Michael consistently came in 20 minutes early to mentor him. He provided this student with a great start to his day. When he would act out Michael never gave up on him, evidence of Michael's patience. Michael was a true friend for this boy. Michael demonstrates excellent morals and values. He has always been honest and forthright. Because of this, Michael has an excellent rapport with other students and the staff at Regina, and is well liked and respected. Michael was eager to take on a leadership role in our school and classroom. He enthusiastically participated in prayer services, and was always one of the first to donate to our monthly service projects. He used his recess time to create cards for our elderly buddies at Bickford Cottage or thank you notes for the many people who assist Regina. Academically, Michael proved himself to be a highly motivated and mature student. He consistently took responsibility for his own education as was proven through his academic dedication and effort. Michael enthusiastically accepted academic challenges in my classroom. Michael was an eager participant in class, and was extremely conscientious about his work. He strove not just to complete his tasks, but to fully understand and to be able to apply the concepts he was taught. I have no doubt that this dedication to excellence will serve him well in the future. Michael is a consistently friendly, respectful, and positive student. Throughout his time in my classroom, he showed himself to be a leader among his peers. Michael was always willing to help another student in need, and was always among the first to extend an offer of help to me and other teachers as the need arose. He demonstrated concern and looked out for younger students in our elementary building. His positive attitude and good humor were enjoyed by faculty members and students alike. Being a leader menns taking charge and making good decisions with his/her actions. A good leader avoids getting into trouble and always knows what to do when things get difficult. They can work with anyone and are respectful of all his/her surroundings. However, you have to remember that a person may be a good leader, but do they let others take the lead? Being a leader isn't just given upon you. Someone isn't just born with leadership skills. Leadership must be earned. Leaders are the people chosen above the rest that go above and beyond when a task is given to them. Leaders work harder than most people to create a good environment for everyone. Leaders aren't bestowed upon by popularity. A good leader is chosen by his/her actions and is involved with their community and school. I feel that I can be a leader at times, but I can also step aside and let others take charge. I probably, to most people am a quiet person, but I still have leadership skills. Some of the skills I have include Diligence, a good Role Model, Understanding, Persistence, Punctuality, Flexibility, and more. I know when to lead and when not to. It is important to step up when no one else volunteers, but if you lead a lot, then you should let someone else be a leader. I believe being a good leader has a lot to do with sports. One leadership skill you need in sports is cooperation. I play basketball, two softball leagues, volleyball, club volleyball, and I am looking to try track. In all these sports, I have found that you have to be involved, but let others have the ball. You have to be very cooperative and be a part of your team. But most of all you have to do your best and never hold back any of your skills. I also have to take leadership with my siblings. Ihave aseven -year old sister and a ten -year old brother. I am the oldest child in my family so I have to be careful of the decisions I make because my siblings look up to me, especially my sister. I babysit them quite often and that really helps me practice my leadership skills. When one of them is acting up I need to take charge and get them back into line, but not be to bossy and let them have some free reign. It is also important that you take the time to be with your family. I enjoy spending time with my friends, but I also want to spend time with my family whenever I can. Whether it is playing a card game with them or opening a present you got for them on Christmas, I love spending time with my family. One other way leadership has affected me is at my school. I believe a good leader can maintain good grades, but isn't focused constantly about sports and academic work. My favorite subject is math. I always try my very best on homework, even when I don't understand the concept. I always have my homework done on time. Something I have always been puzzled about is when my friends don't try their very best on ~s/her 0 m '~ -v z -. 0 homework or they just don't even do it until the period before the due assignment. It would kill me to not do my homework. And somehow it always gets to me when I don't do well on a quiz, test, or just my daily work. I am a great student, I have lots of friends, I am very involved, and I always take leadership when it comes my way. 0 0 tin c' ,--, e -V ''~ _ p .. ~D Brenda Yuska Regina Elementary 2120 Rochester Ave Iowa City, IA 52245 To Whom It May Concern: I have been asked to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of Gabby Thomsen. 1 have known Gabby for five years. By Ken Westrick 7th Grade Regina Leadership, to me, means to be able to keep a group of people under control while not excluding someone or making them unhappy. To be able to have leadership is to be the leader of a group of people. A person with good leadership will not exclude anyone from any kind of activity. They should include everyone and try to everybody happy. If someone wants to participate, they shouldn't say, "you wouldn't be good at it" or "I don't think you'll like it." Instead, they should encourage them to try their best and to try everything that they think they would be interested in. In my life, leadership has been something I have always known. When I was in kindergarten through in seventh grade right now, I think that all of my different teachers have been considered leaders. My coaches from all of the sports camps, from football and basketball at Regina, and some of the people at Wyldlife for YoungLife at Iowa City have been very good leaders for me and my friends. Even some of my friends are good leaders at my school. All of these people try to include everyone in whatever they do and they always try to get you better. Leadership has effected my decisions in life at school and in sports. At school, I consider all of my teachers, leaders. They give us instructions on what to do and keep us on track and focused. In sports, all of my coaches that I've had have been great leaders. They teach us skills that will help us get better at the sport. The people from Wyldlife teach you to follow God and teach us about and read out of the Bible. All of these people try to include everybody in all activities and try to help everyone. They also try to give you confidence in what your doing. ra 0 ... . 0 O P''1 ~~ ~ 6 ~~i 1 __~ _~ t-JZ°~ r+,3 C-~ i~ O Derek Fawcett Regina High School 2140 Rochester Avenue Iowa City Iowa, IA 52245 To Whom It May Concern, I currently have Ken Westrick in my Algebra I classroom as a student. Ken is an excellent example as to what a student is supposed to behave according to and provides the classroom atmosphere more of a positive attitude. He is a great example for other students to follow in that he is always diligent in his work and is ready and willing to participate in any and all classroom discussion even if he does not understand the concepts being discussed wholly. This being said, Ken does not fear failure and is comfortable with it, which shows both his maturity and his willingness to learn from them. Outside of the classroom, Ken is involved in may activities including, but not limited to: football, basketball, track, Japanese School, Wyldlife, Younglife Iowa City, attends St. Patrick's Church of Iowa City, Iowa. A quick glance at his involvements within school walls will tell you that Ken makes friends easily, is sociable, athletic, and is willing to branch out into very different sports. A focus on his activities outside of the school walls can say much as well. Ken is very involved in the lives of others. This is very uncommon for kids Ken's age as most are focused on themselves and what they have to gain where Ken is more focused on others and what he himself has to give. Ken is also very interested in his family history and strives to learn more about Japanese heritage. Unlike most students, family is clearly important to him and he finds it important to remain educated about his family's background and origins. The last thing that strikes me as unique about Ken is his focus, not on himself, but on God. I once heard that you can tell much about a person not by what they do during the working hours, but what they choose to do in their spare time. Many young kids will choose to play video games at home, but this exceptional young man spends his personal time helping others and giving to those in need. This is a trait found in only the exceptional, and Ken is nothing less. Leadership is not easy and requires a ~ lot of work and tons of patience. It requires diligence and lots of persistence. It requires diligence because it sometimes hard work to get others to believe and follow you. You must be persuasive and very giving but still take charge. Think to yourself if you are making the right choices and are a good role model for the people that follow you. People might think you are a good leader if you can solve their problems. You have to be able to make them lookup to you by helping them through everything and making a difference in their lives. Make sure that you do not control their lives, and you have to take time aside from leading them to stop and listen. To be a leader you have to never go for "O.K" You have to shoot for the best in you and in your friends. Never settle for less than your best. You can be a leader with all those traits or perfect only a few of them. Either way, you must be good at what you choose. Leadership is important in everyone's lives, even adults. Adults' leaders are their bosses or sometimes friends. Being guided by other people towards something can affect your whole life. Here is an example. Your friend asks if you want to go to a local store, so you go with him. When you leave you see him hide something in his pocket and leave the store. What do you do? A good leader would try to convince him not to and maybe say that you forgot to pay and go back and pay for it yourself. It would take a lot of guts to do that and would be risking your friendship. A good leader would do that and still be able to go back to that friend and still remain a friend while doing the right thing. To be a leader is to do the right thing, and still be friends with the people that follow you. You should set a good example and not lead people to make bad decisions. The biggest goal in a leader is to make wise decisions and to follow all rules you can. If you follow a bad person, most likely you will become like them. If you follow a good person, you will most likely become a good person. You must strive to be a better person. Troop 210 has more thirty active scouts and is based out of Regina. I have known Andrew Yowell since he became active with the boy scouts in May 2009. Andrew has grown as a boy scout through his leadership and roles of responsibility that he has earned. Andrew has shown leadership qualities since his first inception to scouting. Andrew first served as a patrol leader. As a patrol leader, Andrew was responsible for communicating and organizing patrol activities for eight scouts. This includes organizing meals and assigning duties to other patrol members during scout activities. In addition, a patrol leader is required to attend a weekly patrol leadership meeting that is an addition to the normal scout meeting and activities. Holding the position of patrol leader is the first example of Andrew's leadership qualities because he fulfilled his responsibilities and met the expectations of the adult leaders and his patrol. Andrew also shows leadership qualities by his commitment to scouting. Trying to balance the time commitments of organized sports, homework, family and scout can be difficult. Andrew routinely attends the scouting functions and meetings and this comment is a great example of leadership and responsibility. Andrew has earned rank advancements and several merit badges and these are a result of his time commitment to scouting. In September of 2010, Andrew was elected as a senior assistant troop leader by his peers. Andrew's peers trusted his leadership qualities enough to vote him as the second in the command of troop 210. This is a high honor and defines the trust and leadership qualities that Andrew has as a member of the boy scouts. Andrew's leadership skills will continue in this role as he is now responsible for troop events, planning leadership meetings, organizing high adventure trips and being responsible for leading thirty scouts to meet the national requirements of the boy scout organization. Andrew is a great example of leadership in scouting. He started as a patrol leader of eight boys and eamed the respect and trust of his fellow scouts to now lead the entire troop of thirty. Along the way, Andrew participated in many of the scouting events and hopes to conclude his scouting career with the ultimate leadership achievement which is earning the eagle scout rank. By Caleb Gehris 7th Grade Regina Leadership is not something lightly given to somebody. It must be earned, you must show that you deserve to be know as a leader. A leader must be a guide to those who stray, help those that struggle, and be a role model to all. Leaders must have many different qualities. They must be diligent and work hard to reach their goal. Ambition is also a good quality, you should do your best and not settle with average. You should be persistent and be willing to put in time to reach your goal. They always strive to get to their goal, and help others to reach it as well. Good leaders think of others. They understand others problems and try to help them find a solution. Good leaders are able to stand up for what is right even if it is not the popular vote. They can speak in front crowds to voice the concerns of others. In my life I have played the role of a leader as well as a follower. In many of the outside of school activities I have helped others achieve higher skill and help them to work together. In groups that are disagreeing I try to help them come to an agreement. In soccer I help my team members work together and help them succeed when we play our games. In scouts I am a leader but I am also a follower. I help the others in my group to work together, but I also have to follow the leader of all the groups, the Senior Patrol Leader. I am a Patrol Leader. I must take orders from him and also give orders to my group. I also help my friend with math home work when he needs it. I always try to help others when they struggle, and I strive to always do my best. The louder leaders will probably know that they are the leader because they will have people following them and wanting to do just like them. Two other types of leaders are ones who lead people do do good things, and ones who lead to do bad things. Both must have followers to be considered leaders. They can go one of two ways with their leadership. They can be leaders who lead their peers to do good things and make good decisions, and ones who make bad decisions that influence their fol- lowers to do bad also. The leaders that influence bad decisions are the worst leaders to have around your peers. If you are going to be a follower you want to be following a leader who is the person who will lead you do make the right decisions, not the bad one. Also, a good leader knows when to lead, and when to step down and let somebody else lead. I have tried in my life to be a good leader, which leads to me making good decisions, because I know that if I make a bad one, other people may think it is okay and do it. I consider myself as a good leader, because I never lead others to do bad things through my decisions. She leads people with her actions, and is well respected by her peers. She gets very good grades, so it pushes me to do better. She does a lot of tutoring because she likes to help other people and use her talents that God gave her to the best of her abilities. She strives for her best and pushes herself to do as well as she can. She makes sure she makes good decisions and knows the consequences of a bad decisionl. She always thinks about a decision before she makes it, making sure there will not be a bad consequence coming out of a decision she makes. She is careful to make sure her followers will not be pushed to make a wrong decision because of a decision she made. She is a great leader that I can learn from and work to be like. N C! My definition of a leader is a person who doesn't label himself or herself as a leader and people follow them. Also in my definition of leadership is the trait of being able to lead people. A leader can lead people in many ways. They can lead people towards the good or towards the bad. There are many types of leaders for example there are silent leaders, sport leaders, academic leaders, and loud leaders. Leaders should know when to lead people in the right direction and when to just be followers. I believe that leadership works like the solar system of the followers revolving around the leader. Many people have the trait of leadership but some people-use ititr t}re~vrong-way ii~e a blackhole they try tosuck people towards there way and only there way. Other people use there leadership in the right way and lead people on the right path like a sun. Those people lead people down the wrong path. Some people have the trait of leadership but they choose not to use it and be a follower and get lead by the wrong people. You don't have to know that you are a leader to be a leader. I have seen many people affected by silent leaders who don't even know that they are leaders. I have personally seen many people affected by leaders, many in good ways but some in very bad ways. Most leaders start out good but slowly go towards the worse and take their followers with them. There are few leaders who genuinely start out good and r-emain good. Leadership has affected me in many ways both good and bad. I once was a follower under a leader that started out good but when he found out he had control he started to turn to the worse. He tried to take control but when the followers found out they stopped following him. I have also have been affected by good leaders for example I have followed a leader that when he was lead down the wrong path he spoke out and lead everyone back on the right path. I also have been a leader and tried to lead my followers down the right path. After my group broke up from the first leader I tried to keep my friends together and-it~as hard#o-keep people together.- I sFent a ton ~f time trying to bring everyone to agree on what to do and why to do it. Eventually I got everyone to agree on what to do and they decided to have me lead them. Leadership has affected my decisions in many different ways. One of the many times it has affected my life was when my friends and I were followers of one lepder. That iEat}erwas-trymg~get us to~do something thatwasagainst the-rules and some people decided to follow what he said to do. I tried to stand up against that leader and few of the other followers decided to listen to me. I went away and did something else. They got yelled at and punished. 0 0 c'~ .... -o Z O NpNOR CC ~ 9~~ ~ ~ ~~~W~OL Regina Junior & Senior High School November 2010 Youth Advisory Grant Selection Committee: 2150 Rochester Avenue Iowa City, IA 52245 Phone: (319)338-5436 Fax: (319) 887-3817 Derek Burger is a 7th grade student in my Religion /Advisory class at Regina Junior High. As for dependability, Derek has many more responsibilities at home than most of his classmates. Derek knows his mother depends on him to help not only with household chores but also with the needs of his siblings. Derek is a young man that truly cares for others. He works hard to get to know people well so he can really know what others are going through. He takes the time to be a good friend and tries never to leave anyone out or behind. Payton Evans- 8th Regina Jr. High My definition of leadership is how a person influences others. There are many kinds of leadership, whether it is positive or negative, or silent or verbal. Many people have the ability and qualities to be a leader, but some choose not to use them. The silent leaders illustrate leadership in a less noticeable, but just as effective, way. Many times in life, the wrong choice is the easiest. Good leaders are influential by making good decisions and convincing others to do the same. I think most of the time negative leaders have the easier job. Most people will want to do what is "cool" or what everyone else is doing, even if that means making a bad decision. A lot of leaders don't label or think of themselves as leaders. There is a difference between someone who is a leader and someone who bosses others around. Communication is an important factor in leadership. This is where the different kinds of leaders come in. An example of a nonverbal leader would be someone who "sets the example". Leadership has had a great impact on my life and decisions. I have been affected in both positive and negative ways. I have seen some people who are leaders and don't even realize it, but when they do, they take advantage of their power. If a lot of people like them and admire them, they will often do what that person says is right. On the other hand, I have also seen many positive leaders. It may be harder for them to get people to do the right thing, but in the end, they walk away with a better reputation. There are times where you have to choose between two situations or people. You have to think about what the right choice is and what may be the easier choice, but not necessarily the right one. Times like these are when you might have to stick up and be a leader yourself. I have found Payton to be a very intelligent young lady, quite organized and helpful to others as well as myself. In science, we have been spending a fair amount of time conducting investigations and studying engineering concepts. Payton was very comfortable with the investigative process in science, and picked up and understood the engineering concepts quickly. For example we spent time studying engineering principles from our Project Lead the Way course by focusing on one of the engineering programs. This program was challenging to use, and many students needed help. Not only was Payton able to understand and use the program rapidly, she helped several other students in the class with their projects (without being asked). This demonstrates a concern for her fellow students in using her understanding and talents to assist others. She also demonstrates good initiative and motivation because she doesn't need an invitation to help someone or work for them-she does what she thinks is needed and does it when it needs to be done. Washington Street Iowa City, IA 52240 Clerk/youthrecognition grantapp.doc Anna Kaldjian Stn Grade Regina Junior High School What is your definition of leadership? What has it meant inyour life? How has it affected your decisions? Leadership means being an example to others around you, and having them lookup to you and respect your actions. Although everyone makes mistakes, a leader takes responsibility for his/her actions, and accepts the consequences. Often, that is what makes others respect and lookup to a leader, more than if they never made a mistake in the first place. It's not so much what the leader does or doesn't do, but how she/he handles and responds to situations -both situations created by the person his/her -self, and situations created by others. Leaders are chosen by the people around her/him, not by the leaders themselves. A leader does not always take the lead. He/she knows that they can if necessary, but also allows others lead and isn't seen as the one who is always trying to be in control of everything, never allowing anyone else to be in charge. It is important for leaders to know when to lead and when to step back and let others take the lead. Up to this point, leadership has not really affected my decisions or my life that much. I do not have younger siblings to give an example to, but I also realize that many people have leaders of their own age group. I am confident in my opinions and decisions. However, I do not try to be a leader. If others choose to make me a leader, I will try to live up to it, but it is not one of my goals to be considered a leader. I will be who I am, regardless of if others think of me as a good leader. I hope that people will respect me and my decisions, but I cannot make myself a leader. Others will choose me as a leader if they believe my actions, reactions, and decisions deserve it. 0 e~ O -, n 1 'D Z _. o ao PREUCIL SCHOOL of MUSIC .S'ir~rrki training z.r life training MAIN CAMPUS 524 North f ohnson Street Iowa City°, IA 52245-2840 Tr~le~lronr 319-337-4156 Pa<~i~nile 319-337-9502 I'ozer~uarl 319-337-7422 NORTH CAiO~TPUS 2)16 Northgate Dri~-e Io~~~a Cit}', lA 52245-9570 1'ele~f~orte 319-248-1248 ~" aCJ'7 n711P 311-248-1251) 1 oi<<~»zcril 319-248-125] ww~u.;~reucil.ar~ Sonja Ieithamel Dig°ertor Christie Felsing A.r.rr.rtcr7tt 1?irecta~° Doris Preucil Director Erneritu.r 'I`hc Preucil School is a number ~~f the National Guild of the (:onnnunir~~ Schools of the Arts rind the Snzulci rlssociatiun of d~c :~meric:~s. What has it meant in your life, and how has it affected your decisions? 0 0 By Tom Pugh " -a 7th grade, Iowa City Regina _ -- 0 o~ My definition of a leader is someone who strives to do the right thing. I believe that leaders are people that others lookup to because they do the right thing. If someone is a leader, they should be hard working and persistent. Leaders never stop striving for their goal. They never quit and work hard. Leaders are also very understanding. They listen to others and are polite. Leaders always confront problems. They never leave them and hope they magically disappear. I think that public speaking ability is important because you can't be shy if you want to be a leader. Leaders are loyal. They always tell the truth. They also always help others when they need it. Helping people is important because if you are nice and help people, others will try to do the same. There are good leaders and bad leaders. The only thing wore than being a follower is being a bad leader. Bad leaders lead people into doing bad things. One example of a bad leader is Adolf Hitler. He led Germany into doing terrible things. Good leaders lead people to do good things. An example of a good leader is Martin Luther King jr. He led people to act peacefully and fairly. He gave African-Americans to civil rights and fairness. Leaders need to lead people into doing good things because people lookup to them and want to be like them. If people try to be like a bad leader, they might become bad leaders. On the other hand, if people try to be like good leaders, they might become good leaders. I try to lookup to good leaders because I want to be a good leader. Trying to be a good leader makes me a better person and affects my decisions. Tom has always tried to go above and beyond expectations in and out of the classroom. Tom has a very likable personality and other students are naturally drawn to Tom and his leadership. Tom excels in and out of the classroom because of his hard work and dedication to his studies and extra curricular activities. Tom is the duly elected 7tn grade class president. His peers nominated and elected him with overwhelming results. As the class president, he suggested a class service project, collecting mittens and hats for those in need. While this project is still in the planning stage, Tom continues to work hard to get the project off of the ground by suggesting and contacting organizations to take the items and motivating his fellow students to participate in the project. Tom is an outstanding student. He earned straight A's during the first quarter of his 7tn grade year. This is not as easy fete as this year is quite a transition from elementary school. He achieved these grades while participating in football and the new Mock Trial program at Regina. Tom works well with his peers. In Science, students are expected to work in groups on a daily basis. Tom assumes a natural leadership role with any group with which he is assigned to work. He is organized, easy to get along with, in class and in social situations, and he is very flexible. Tom often helps others during his study hall with their homework. He is patient beyond his years. Christopher Rice ..o z .- D What has it meant in your life and how has it affected your decisions? People that others look up to are the people I consider leaders. This can be done in many ways and there are many types of leaders. Some leaders earn their reputation and respect because they are confident in their ability to lead. Others are silent leaders, they lead from afar, but people still look up to them even still. Good leaders are not mean and will listen to other people's ideas. Then they will work with the group to find the best option and follow it. If they are unavailing, they will take the blame and not blame others. Great leaders are not common, but they are important. Without some of the greatest leaders of our time, the world would be very different than it is today. In my life leadership has been important because I have always looked to leaders to follow. Most of the time I have looked to my brother to follow, He has been a good leader. I have always been a follower and I don't like to make decisions. This year it has started to change. I am starting to see myself as a leader. My younger cousin has started to look up to me and I am feeling more confident as a leader. I feel that in the future I will only become more of a leader. I will try and hope to lead him in the right direction. Throughout my life leadership has played a big role. I have always thought and felt that I need to set a good example. I study hard and always do my best. Through hard work and lots of studying, I have excelled in my schoolwork. I have gone through classes doing well and getting good grades. I have become very good in math and science. I feel that I am not a major leader to most people who know me. I am not the leader type and I do not like being called a leader. I do not get to pick my role in my life; younger kids will always look to others for leadership. I do not know what the future will bring, but I hope that I will keep advancing. I feel that I might deserve this grant because I have tried and like all good leaders, I have, and will do my best in the future. By Lauren Ronnfeldt, Seventh grade Regina Junior High School My definition of leadership is someone who has a lot of good character traits. It is also someone who leads others but does not boss them around. A leader is someone who is a good example to everyone around him or her. Leaders always try to do what is right. Even if a group of people is pressuring them to do something that is wrong. Leadership has affected my life in many ways. One way I think people show leadership is competing in sports. Often many leaders participate in sports. Most leaders do not think of themselves as leaders. These leaders also know to step aside and let others lead. Another way I think people show leadership is in school. They help others if they need help, for example tutoring. They strive to get good grades. Some ways I show leadership are in sports and in school. It is important that leaders help out in their community. Some ways I help out in my community area alter serving, and helping with other things in my church. I also donate money to the poor. My three older brothers have helped me become a leader. They have helped me become a better person. I am a leader but most times I ain a follower. Even though followers usually do what other leaders do, if the leader is pressuring followers to do something that is wrong a follower should step up and be a leader. Leaders should encourage people and help them along if they are going through hard times, but these leaders also know to step aside and let others lead. Leadership can change many people's decisions. My parents, family and friends have all affected my decisions by leadership. They have shown me the right thing to do, and helped me through hard times. My definition of leadership is always making the right decisions, and also helping someone else to make the right decisions. A leader is someone others look up to or respect. Leaders are not bossy; they lead respectfully. They make good decisions, and help others make good decisions also. Most people think of someone older than themselves for leaders, but 1 believe a good leader can lead anyone, no matter the age, gender, race, etc. Leadership is an important value to have, and most people never get the chance to use their leadership skills. Leaders can accept responsibility for their actions and mistakes. They don't always have to lead verbally, but they can also lead in a way that people watch them and follow them. For example, if everyone is doing something bad, and just one person says no, it might give others the courage to stay away from that and say no. A leader should also know their own weaknesses, along with strengths. They have to be able to step back and let someone else be in charge. My school is Kindergarten through 12~" grade, so going through it; you see a lot of leaders. There are the people in the grades ahead of you, but also they people in your own grade. I am the oldest child in my family, so I have always had that aspect in my life to lead them, and to teach the 0 right from wrong. 4_J ~ ~r, ~ ,-, i w c~ -c ~~, - s --, Leadership has affected my decisions because what I do now stays with me for the rest of my life. It also is a show of character if you can stick with your own opinion and not give up, even if it's the unpopular decision. Good leaders, for example, if you were the president of a club at your school, should be able to listen to what people say, and use it to lead better. Many people use their power for bad. The second hand made its way slowly, but surely around the cloclG' O J The anticipation made it feel like forever. The click of each second gave cadence to our actions, and dragged us from the drone of the teacher's monologue. My classmates poked at each other, signaling to the clock. It was 11:10. As the clock's last rotation around the dashes passed to hit exactly 11:11, the classroom immediately erupted in applause. Not just our class clapped, but all of the other classes joined in the acclamation. It was the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Immediately, our teacher pointed her finger at my face. There was no doubt in her mind that orchestrated the chaos when she mouthed the words "you". I could tell by her swift, brisk walk towards my seat that she was legitimately angry. She motioned me to proceed to the hallway, following closely with heavy footsteps. After she shut the door, she asked me what all this clapping was about. I explained to her the reason, but still she stood fuming at me. I guess the fact that it was 11:11 on 11/11, had little significance to her compared to the importance of her teaching. She explained how it disrupted the class, and took away from her teaching. She then lowered her voice, and said, "Killian, you can get the entire grade, and I mean EVERYONE, to clap at the same time, and disrupt their learning but have you ever thought of a single way to put your leadership abilities to good use?" As I glumly walked toward the office to talk to the principal, I understood this wasn't the first time that I didn't really lead responsibly. I had always had a general awareness of my influence over others, but I was only beginning to understand how great my gift was. The following year, I had a teacher I admired. He made class extremely enjoyable, and I learned a lot. Later that year he invited me to participate in a group called Destination Imagination, which met regularly to write a script and perform it in front of an audience. At first, I was reluctant, because it wasn't really considered the "coolest" thing to do, but it was hard for me to say no to such a persuasive teacher. It was during this endeavor that I realized it was important for me to broaden my horizons and try new things. I ended up really enjoying the experience, and even persuaded two other kids to join who had not even considered it as an option. I learned that real leadership is both inspirational and co-operative. Through the creative process of writing a script and acting, I discovered that a great leader needs to help others succeed beyond what they thought they were capable of achieving. I led my team to win districts. We all grew from the experience, and learned to work as a team. More recently, I have come to accept my talent for math and embrace the idea that a "real man" can participate in more than just sports. True leaders, I believe, must be able to be honest with themselves. I gave up worrying about what others might think of me and joined the math team. We practiced two mornings a week before school for a couple of months. The work paid off, and I placed first at state, with my team taking third, qualifying us for the state competition. From both of these instances, I have developed a strong sense of teamwork, which definitely goes hand in hand with N O becoming a better leader. o i -v Thomas Jefferson was quintessential to America gaining its independence, and he is considered one of our founding fathers. He could surely be considered a great leader. He once said, "In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principal, stand like a rock." With this great quote, I understand the importance of standing up for your values, and being an example that others can learn from and be inspired by. I know that to be a great leader, this is what it really comes down to. In my life I have discovered that one must not worry about being cool but rather lead from the heart. I have no doubt in my mind that there is great pleasure in succeeding and receiving awards, but I have learned through experience that the greatest joy has been inspiring my classmates to do what they do best, to yearn for more out of life and strive to give one's all. That's what real leadership means to me. 0 n I -v z i J __NpNOR ~ <~ ti ~~`W~O`9 Regina Junior & Senior High School November 2010 Youth Advisory Grant Selection Committee: 2150 Rc lows Phone: Fax: This letter is in regard to the consideration of Killian Beck for the Youth Advisory Killian is an 8`" grade student at Regina High School where I am employed as teacl Killian is an academically gifted student who is advanced in several classes. Probably the biggest reason why I am recommending Killian is he needs more than the average student. I think being a leader is a difficult position. No matter how good you are at what you do; leaders always get criticized. Killian is a strong individual and I know he will to stand up to any challenge. What concerns me more is if and how he is being challenged. I believe that my curriculum is sound, but I always worry, as a teacher, that I am not doing enough for Killian. I will be honest; Killian needs to grow up. Being a leader is a hard and fast way to realize how difficult life can treat you, regardless of your intellect. Again, I want to reiterate that Killian needs opportunities to show his real colors and I believe that through leadership he could grow the most as an individual. I think it would be hard to bean outlier, like Killian Beck. The fact that he does it so well, allows me to recommend him for a leadership award. I believe this would be the best thing for him. By Joe Jennings 8th grade Regina What is leadership and what does it mean to me? To define leadership, I would say it's an important and vital trait in which makes a person a great role model. It takes time to become a leader but once actions of concerning others than yourself are committed perpetually, you will build up this reputation. It is defined by how you act within a group of people and how you handle particular situations, whether a on the playground where you tell a bully to knock it off when he is picking on younger kids, or when at a party and you say no to drugs or alcohol when pressured by your friends and peers. Being a leader means to be a person who can also resist temptations that the "bandwagon followers" would flow with casually. The person who has this trait can show willpower when times are rough and can be loyal towards a goal and doesn't back down. Athletes are great examples of a person who'd show this trait, especially when the specific person is a team captain or MVP; they are capable of having people, in a way, envy him/her in a positive way, or see them as a good example of someone to rely on as a friend and a hero in the workplace. Leadership is definitely something you can notice everyday, even in the smallest way in so many people. Having great parents and teachers who influence me to do what's right has really caused me to notice people's actions better, and that has made me a person of better choice making. I don't see me as a leader exactly because I feel I could do a better job at not following the crowd. A person with leadership I could say is a runner because they encourage the others to try your hardest and endure what's hard because the race will be done quicker than you know it. A phrase from a leader known as Coach Swope of the XC team says, " I have put forth my best effort for this race and what was left is lost forever". This is a great saying that emphasizes the fact that you must try your best in things you do and when you were a bad influence, you can't ever have that same opportunity to improve yourself, only in the future. Leadership has effected my decision making because I know whatever I do today will make people lookup or down at you. I will say right now that it has been hard sometimes, like when letting your friends down when you know you should not follow their persuading. Whenever this trait is shown through my work, teachers and friends see me as this determined kid and they will treat me with respect, and at sometimes they will want to follow my example as well. I usually show this the most during cross-country meets where you have to push through the pain and tiredness of the race. My dad sees me as a leader simply because I can endure the roughness. Leaders can also have bad influences though, maybe through force or even through just having raw power, a power that people are afraid to face. These leaders sometimes must be stopped by good leaders, in which will even make their reputation go up further. I feel that this trait is important in my future becaused then you will be known as responsible, strong, and hard-working for what's right. o 0 t -o s 0 __~ ~: <__= 2120 Rochester Avenue Iowa City, IA 52245 November 18, 2010 Dear Leadership Grant Committee, I am privileged to write this letter of recommendation for Joe Jennings, who is applying for Leadership Grant. What has it meant in your life? How hat affected your decisions? Leadership is standing up for what is right, and helping those who are straying off onto the wrong path. When leading, you need to have a good sense of what is right and what is wrong. You need to be disciplined, and have values that people will lookup to. You make yourself a leader when doing things that are good for the community, and working hard in school, workplace, etc. I have had many leaders that have affected my life. People like priests, teachers, and my parents have all led me to the path of good and right. My Native American heritage has included leadership for centuries. My ancestors have been leaders of our tribe for generations, and leadership skills are in my blood. My grandfather was the previous head of our family, and ever since he died my father has been the leader of our family. He is also one of the only people in our tribe who have earned their doctorate degree. He has told me time after time that I will eventually have to take my role as a leader in our tribe. When that time comes, I hope to be prepared for the great responsibilities that come with leading. I have been accepted into multiple leadership programs and camps that will help me practice my leadership skills. The most recent camp was a summer camp at the University of Iowa where we went on campus for a week and took a college coEU-se. We did multiple leadership activities outside of class, and it was a good opportunity to show my skills. Regarding Jarod Concha I am writing this to support Jarod Concha a young man I have known all of his life. Jarod is a neighbor who is very responsible and outgoing. He is very personable waving whenever he sees me and quick to help if I need him to work an a task at my home. I have found Jarod to be very good with young children and a leader of young men his age. He is very capable of leading the young men over at his home in games and activities around the neighborhood. It is my opinion that Jarod would be a good leader in situations calling for group activities that need developing toward a project or leading an activity for those less fortunate in our community. He is quick to pick up on a situation that needs to be thought out and in need of action to accomplish a task. For these reasons I would recommend Jarod for leadership activities in our community in a group setting. X can see him assuming leadership roles in his future. I have known Jarod for two years as his science teacher and as a member of his church community. Jarod is a leader amongst leaders. His leadership style is outstanding. Jarod is quietly modest young man, yet students listen when he speaks. He is very easy to get along with and is concerned about the welfare of others. He is an outstanding student. The Belin-Blank Institute selected Jarod for their summer program this last summer. The selection criterion is very strict and requires that the student be an outstanding student academically and willing to work hard and work well with other. Before attending the institute and while there, Jarod showed great diligence and persistence in creative problem solving. He is always working to improve himself and his academics. Jarod is a wonderful role model for the students of Regina Junior High School. His actions and life reflect high moral values. In closing, let me reflect on one of the occasions, which show the type of role model Jarod Concha is. During homecoming week students were asked to wear red, white and blue to celebrate patriotic day. Jarod wore his Native American clothing; very proud of his heritage. He was very ready to explain the parts of his clothing to anyone who asked. I admired how he was so willing to share his ethnic heritage with his fellow students, in an understated way. Jarod Concha should be awarded this grant. He exemplifies leadership in all that he is and all that he does.
