Studying human behavior using virtual environments
How do child pedestrians and cyclists cross roads with traffic?
How do texting pedestrians cross traffic -filled roads?
How do peers influence risky road crossing?
CHILD PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST INJURIES
Statistics
8,000 child pedestrians and 5,000 child bicyclists injured in
collisions with motor vehicles each year
Motor vehicles are involved in 33% of all bicycle -related brain
injuries and in 90% of all fatalities
About a third of fatal bicycling crashes occur at intersections
75% of pedestrian fatalities happen at night
■ Prevention
Need to understand why these collisions occur
Using virtual environments to better understand risk factors for
collisions with vehicles

TAKEAWAYS FROM OUR RESEARCH
Crossing roads with continuous traffic (traffic that does not stop)
Child pedestrians do not show mature road -crossing skills until
age 12.
Child bicyclists do not show mature road -crossing skills until
after age 14, especially when crossing 2 -way traffic
Pedestrians and bicyclists hate to wait, and will accept much riskier
gaps when the traffic is dense
Vehicle -to -pedestrian (V2P) technology
Sending warnings to texting pedestrians' cell phones increases
safety, but they become less situationally aware
Making cell phone warning systems work for mobility impaired
