In my mind just living here at all qualifies everyone. It's more a matter of who actually wants to put in the work of thinking about the needs of others. That is sadly rare, as I suppose it should be with everyone having their own lives to live. I am thrilled by the idea of someone better qualified for that work doing it instead of me, but am wary of the fact that ambition too often finds ways to manifest as apparent qualification. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* To this I'm not sure. I already have a job that I like. My intent in applying is to contribute where I can - sort of as a volunteer. I do generally strive for an objective understanding of any situation, which seems like it ought to be useful for matters of governance. However, I would carry in one bias in particular: and that is a unmovable advocacy for public education. Beyond just having kids in public school, I believe public education to be the only force on the front lines of the perpetual battles with chaos and authoritarianism. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* Basically a mini -congress for the city to keep multiple perspectives involved in decisions. Potential Conflicts of Interest The general rule is that no persons who exercise or have exercised any functions or responsibilities with respect to federally funded activities, or who are in a position to participate in the decision -making process or gain inside information with regard to such activities, may obtain a financial interest or benefit from a federally —assisted activity, or have a financial interest in any contract, subcontract, or agreement with respect to a federally -assisted activity, or with respect to the proceeds of the federally -assisted activity, either for themselves or those with whom they have business or immediate family ties, during their tenure or for one year thereafter. Section 362.5 of the Code of Iowa generally prohibits, with certain important exceptions, a member of City Council from having an interest in a City contract. I work at the University of lowa as a Professor of Mathematics in the area of computational and applied mathematics and can claim to be fairly numerate. I have been mostly active with regards to planning and zoning issues pertaining to the Northside and to historic preservation issues. Because I work on the Pentacrest, I am vested in a thriving downtown district. For much of my time here, the Sycamore Mall/Northside Marketplace was an important part of my and my wife's routine. We particularly miss Lucky's Market. Moreover, Iowa City is too small of a place for anyone to limit their interest to just one district. I have a personal interest in urban planning, from Jane Jacobs to other urbanists. I believe I may have been the only person at the Strong Towns event in Iowa City in 2019 who wasn't from the city government or a student in urban planning or public policy. When the height of the Dubuque Road and Park Avenue Bridge project was being debated, I spoke before the city council and pointed out that the consultants' analysis, offering predictions of number of days of road closure as a function of project cost, only included days due to flooding and excluded days due to construction Finding hidden assumptions/omissions in models/analyses is a big part of my job (I regularly teach the Optimization Techniques course at UI and in a former job helped manage the GPS satellite constellation.) Recently, two major issues presented themselves nationally that required attention by all levels of government pretty much everywhere. lowa City was no exception. I have been active in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at work, including formerly serving as the Director of the Department of Mathematics Committee for Diversity and Inclusion. The UI Math Department has led the nation in the production of PhDs in Mathematics by members of underrepresented groups and has received numerous accolades for this success. My area of research at work is in mathematical medicine and biology. I enjoy a courtesy secondary appointment in the UI medical school. While I am no expert on issues of public health, I do promise to ask the experts good questions to help direct city policy. Finally, my wife Becky owns Big Picture Gallery and Studio in North Liberty. I am attuned to the needs and concerns of small business owners through her (and I designed and built her reception desk and a few other pieces of furniture). What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I have become deeply invested emotionally and otherwise in the Iowa City community. I love my home, my neighborhood, and my city. I hope to be able to serve my fellow residents using the knowledge and ways of thinking that I have gathered over my lifetime through work and personal interests. As mentioned in my background statement, I am quite good with numbers and how they are used in the real world, and I can be constructively critical of analyses that involve numbers. I have spent time learning the big picture issues in urban planning and am continuously listening and learning about how we might help build a more inclusive city. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* In addition to speaking before the council on a couple of occasions, I have interacted a number of times with my district representative, John Thomas. Got a lot of hands on experience working with these two from hearing constituents needs, talking with lobbies, sitting/note taking in committees and sitting in on debates/votes. I also ram for state house in 2022 but stepped down after the primaries. I know how the government works, I've got insight and some experience working with it, now I would just like to be apart of it. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* If selected I would be the youngest individual appointed to the council at 24 years old. This would be giving the people of Iowa City a more representative role on the board as the median age of Iowa City is 26. I would be giving the younger generation of individuals in the city a voice to be heard from and one that's apart of the LGBTQ community. Other than my age, based on my experience and background, I feel like I would fit in on the council, as I know what hurts the citizens of this metropolitan area based off what I learned working for Dave and Zach. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* This city is trying to be more inclusive, just, and sustainable by prioritizing the physical, mental and economic well- being of all residents. This plan was put into action in 2020 to help residents get over covid and the social issues that surrounded our community. The city is also trying to be net zero by 2050. The city also shifted its 2-year strategic plan to 5-years. This giving more time and opportunities for the goals to be achieved. The goals involve a lot of building community engagement and outreach which is spectacular in a town with 30,000 young individuals. I have been both a student and an instructor at UI. I worked for 26 years at ACT in charge of the LSAT, MCAT, and GMAT exams. I am on the Iowa City Golf Association Board of Directors. I taught critical thinking and Philosophy at UI for 16 years. That and my ACT experience have honed my ability to analyze arguments, seek out good evidence, and avoid bad reasoning. I evaluate proposals dispassionately and fairly. That perspective seems appropriate for a council member. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I have had the perspective of a student, UI instructor, businessperson, and long-time resident. Again, I feel that my ability to analyze situations dispassionately would be beneficial. Although I lean Democratic, I can respectfully consider other views. My time teaching and working at ACT showed me the value of tactful and respectful communication. I also am kind of a news junkie so I keep track of what is happening around Iowa City, Iowa, the US, and the world. I managed groups within ACT and that helped hone my people skills. Behind the landscape of the University of Iowa, I found an even larger home from Iowa City. Whether it be the noisy downtown life or the quiet streets where I have taken countless walks, I have always been greeted with a kind welcome or hello. This growing city has been an outlier of innovation through a state of the art university system, a developing public transportation system, and a growing strength between neighbors through a welcoming and outgoing spirit of a sense of community. Coming from a small, rural Iowa community, I have grown up in a place with a sense of community, and Iowa City has brought me a new wave of joy. Throughout high school, I engaged with my rural Iowa community and participated in various ways including the National Honor Society and Student Council, both in executive leadership positions. Outside of high school, I spent one year as the statewide High School Democrats Director for CYDI (College and Young Democrats of Iowa) and I spent the next year as the Policy Director for a non-profit supporting public education in Iowa - IowaSLl. Entering the University of Iowa in the fall of 2021, I was excited to obtain new leadership roles. I spent my first year on campus as a senator for Catlett Residence Hall, serving 1,000+ students in the ARH (Associated Residence Hall Government). This position allowed me to advocate for the needs of the university's largest residence hall population. Beginning in the summer of 2022, I took on the role of Secretary for the University Democrats, where I have been in charge of all email contact for the organization- In addition to this role, I was hired as the campaign manager for Linn County Auditor Joel Miller's campaign for Iowa Secretary of State. This position gave me access to a wide range of important responsibilities including organizing a weekly email campaign to 75,000+ subscribers, managing multiple social media accounts, filing state -mandated finance reports, and scheduling various meetings, interviews, and events for candidate Miller. I strongly believe my years of experience in leadership positions and my steadily growing number of responsibilities in said roles have helped me develop into a qualified, professional candidate for this position to help support this community that I now call home. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* As a member of the City Council, I can bring my background and experience as a statewide executive, statewide campaign manager, and various high school and collegiate leadership roles to a new level By taking this leadership, I am prepared for the difficult work of deliberation and decision -making for the City of Iowa City. To continue my number of contributions, I believe my position as a student at the University of Iowa brings a unique set of eyes to the table. While I am not aware of the rest of the council's lives, I can say this about mine - I would be the council's youngest member at 20 years old who lives in an apartment and without a vehicle. In my view, this would give the City Council a view through the eyes of not only a renter but a resident, who walks or takes a bus nearly everywhere necessary. I have always been fascinated with the idea of mass public transit and being able to live in a city where it is developing is great. If selected to serve, I intend to push the Iowa City transportation system to levels of free and total access, along with opening bridges of transportation to nearby cities like Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities. My contributions of prior and current leadership experience, along with the ability to bring my opinions as the council's youngest and possibly only non -vehicle -owning and an apartment resident will bring a voice to the table for hundreds, upon thousands of residents in similar situations across Iowa City. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* Like most of my time with the news, I keep up to date as time will allow me. I will admit that I struggle to keep up with local affairs at all times, but I am aware of the structure of the City Council, along with the circumstances in which this seat has been vacated. If selected, I would like to spend my tenure on the City Council promoting an increase in public transportation, striving for more renewable energy sources, creating more green spaces, fighting for greater protections for renters, adding more community activities to bring residents of the city closer together, improving sidewalks and walkways, reallocating funds for mental health, and more I look forward to hearing about this amazing opportunity. We suffer from one of the tightest housing markets in Iowa, subject to heavy influence from large, out-of-state property -holding companies that take advantage of the state governments inadequate investment in student housing to jack up market rates. As a renter, and potentially the first renter to sit on the Council since Karen Kubby, renters' issues and affordable housing are understandably top of mind. In a community where 40-50% of housing units are rentals, renters must have a seat at the table when it comes to issues that affect them the most like rental permitting & regulation, zoning, and the availability of public assistance. For a decade, our tax base has been diminishing, making it harder to fund necessary municipal services in times of slow economic growth. All the while, our community's immigrants, people of color, queer folk, and other historically marginalized communities carry on in the struggle for social justice as it relates to building a more welcoming community, racial justice as it pertains to the lingering effects of redlining and a rocky history with law enforcement, and economic justice for hundreds of victims of wage theft. The term, "critical point" may be an understatement. Problems like these don't just go away; they require broad coalitions and hard work to bring about change. I am confident that my background and experiences well -equip me to grapple with this task head-on. I've been working hard to make change in my community since my parents lost their jobs and our home in 2012. It was at that time that I recognized the importance of working people stepping up to take part in the political process. It's a critical need to ensure we have people looking out for the little guy. Issues like access to affordable housing, public transportation, and good schools can make all the difference in the world for a family down on their luck. I started as a volunteer with President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and have held just about any job in politics and advocacy since, including a recent run for state legislature. My experience includes volunteer and paid organizing work for over a dozen local, statewide, and federal Democratic campaigns, two appointments to statewide policy advisory boards relating to youth issues and juvenile criminal justice reform, serving as a fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union, researching the impacts of international education policies on inequality and human development for the South Australian Parliament, serving on the board of the River City Housing Collective, and leading the gun violence prevention nonprofit March For Our Lives Iowa until September 2021. Presently, I serve on the board of directors of the Iowa Farmers Union, Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT), work at a local scientific manufacturing company, and continue to serve in my fourth year as a legislative aide for State Senator Claire Celsi (D-16). I am also active with the Center for Worker Justice, Johnson County Democrats, Iowa City Federation of Labor, and Teamsters Local 238. I want to emphasize how deeply I care about our community. For nine months I spent 12 to 16 hours a day building relationships with voters, community leaders, and the organizations that help Iowa City live up to our standards and values of fairness, equity, tolerance, and justice. I met and befriended folks from all walks of life, members of our immigrant communities, construction workers, activists, small business owners, educators, moms, dads, the rich, the poor, and more. This kind of experience and exposure to diverse groups is critical to effective governance and outreach in a community as diverse as ours. A PDF copy of my current resume can be viewed here: tinyuri.com/DunnCouncilResume What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* As an activist, accessibility, transparency, and the elevation of others are particularly important values of mine. During my campaign for the state legislature, I gave out my personal phone number and email so that people could contact me directly at any time. [(319)360-7682, andrewdunnia@gmail.com] Accessibility and transparency are demonstrated values. As a community organizer, I maintain a small private office at Old Brick for work and meetings. If appointed, I would prioritize accessibility and transparency by utilizing that space for regularly scheduled "office hours," where constituents would have the opportunity to drop in or schedule a one-on-one meeting to discuss whatever issues they'd like. As a legislative aide in the Iowa Senate, I see the workings of the legislature up close and personal. In four sessions, I've cultivated relationships with legislators in both chambers and numerous stakeholders on many diverse issues of concern to the city. My appointment would give the Council an up -front seat to some of the most critical issues affecting local government in the upcoming session, like reforms to property tax, as well as someone in "the room" often enough to stand up and speak out on behalf of our community's need for more, not less local control. Working in the legislature has also situated me as a front -and -center observer of the budgeting process. While nonprofit and state budgeting procedures are not the same as the city's, having this experience does allow me to hit the ground running and lend general familiarity with foreseeable terms and concepts. In a rapidly evolving economic climate and with our community's overall economic growth only starting to approach pre-COVID levels, I believe this experience will lead to expediency and reduce barriers to local growth. As a young professional, and recent attendee of the University of Iowa, I have stronger connections than most with people in the university community, students and faculty alike. These connections can be important to crafting policy that supports/cooperates with our community's biggest partner. My appointment would also give a voice to a major portion of our community that has gone in many ways, purposely unheard, that of youth and people who have just started building their lives in Iowa City; people looking to buy a home, settle down, and start a household. Concerning potential contributions to the policy of the council, I have spent a lot of time working in the sustainability space and have a strong passion for smart community building/design. I'm also interested in examining our areas of cooperation with other communities and finding ways to strengthen partnerships toward mutual goals. I have a strong sense that to achieve the goals outlined in the city's strategic plan, especially when addressing crime, poverty, and mental illness, a sizeable amount of regional cooperation and partnership will be necessary. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* At the time of my application and in addition to meetings with all councilors, I have had one on ones with City Manager Geoff Fruin, IC Parks, and Rec. Director Juli Seydell-Johnson, IC Police Chief Dustin Liston, ICFD Chief Scott Lyons, former Mayor Jim Throgmorton, former Councilor Karen Kubby, and other Johnson County elected officials. I have reviewed and familiarized myself with the Iowa City Charter, the 2015 Charter guide, and the city's recently approved strategic plan. I also spent a significant portion of my undergraduate studies at UI studying the democratic processes and variations of state and local governments. I have a strong understanding of the mechanics and responsibilities of our city government. Through these meetings and experiences, one thing has been crystal clear: teamwork is key. If our community wants something done, many people need to work together honestly, in good faith, and with a clear understanding of compromise. Iowa City is a unique place. One of the most critical components of that uniqueness is our willingness to assert and act on our values through the city budget. I apply knowing that budget season will be well underway should I be appointed on January 10th. The budget is the most important part of the year for the city, and generally, the most complex and detail -oriented work of the year for the Council. The budget determines the city's spending priorities for the year and directly impacts hundreds of full, part-time, and seasonal city employees. The budget also lays out avenues of investment in community infrastructure and growth. Over the last 10 years, we have slowly lost access to the state -provided property tax backfill. That money will stop coming in as of this year, and those lost funds will be a significant challenge for the city in the future. Taking all this into account, I feel well prepared to immediately get to work toward achieving our community's goals and feel strongly that I would add valuable contributions to the budgeting process among other city responsibilities. My wife and I have small businesses in town, and I have a day job in Muscatine. While I have strong roots in the Iowa City community and a deep desire to see it improve. I also have the benefit of not being wholly insulated in Iowa City and can bring a regional perspective to our town. I have a master's degree in Public Health and work in the Environmental Field. My academic interest was in Environmental Policy, and as such, I have taken an interest in political science, economics, environmental justice, Urban Planning, and public policy before working for industry. While these skills work well in my current roles, they have taken a more practical and less academic focus. I believe both the theory and my years of practice would benefit the council. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I believe I would add another voice to the long-term sustainable development of Iowa City. I believe my industry background helps me see the benefit of cultivating a diverse workforce that may not be as heavily dependent on the University and its hospital system. Most importantly, I think you would add someone who has ties to not just the city but to the region and help many of our residents and visitors who share these attributes would have a voice that seems to be lacking on the council. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* I have seen public meetings in person and online. I pay attention to the minutes or the paper that cover your proceedings as an interested citizen. I have a very basic understanding of the structure of a mayor that is first among equals in a council-manager system. I know that in addition to public meetings, there are closed meetings, listening posts, and other obligations that come up from time to time for council members. I am in no way an expert on the council, but I would be pleased to learn more. We have a limited income to deal with, and, under my leadership, made some expensive projects come to fruition. Our property has a very diverse population, and we have kept everyone's interest in mind when making decisions. To me a condo association is a small town. It has bylaws, rules and regulations, and procedural rules just like city government, just on a much smaller scale. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* As a condo president I have had to deal with some of this cities rules and regulations and have found them to be written without taking how a condo association functions into consideration I could share with the council why or how when it comes to making new rules and regulations so they may be written without a negative impact on this cities many condo associations I am a solid blue collar worker and have worked as a seasonal city employee in the past t worked for different departments for multiple seasons and have a good understanding of parks and neighborhoods. I've been a resident of Iowa city for approximately 25 years and feel its my civic duty to step up to help the city make some short and long term plans materialize, just as i have done on our little property. Also, I served as President of the Iowa City Area Chinese Association (ICACA) for two years In this role, I organized eleven events highlighted below. The event I am most proud of is when Iowa City's Community School District Board of Education recognized my culture by officially adding the Lunar New Year (celebrated largely by the Asian community) to its academic calendar as a day off in January for its students and their families. 2020 was a year of civil unrest brought on by the killing of George Floyd and Covid-19. And then the Asian community was affected which fueled me to get involved to help make my home a better place for all to live and feel safe. At this point, I considered myself an activist. I started by introducing Asian culture to the community through art events. While doing these events, I came to appreciate Iowa City as being inclusive, and diverse. If selected to represent the Iowa City community as a member of the City Council, I will use this platform to fight for equality, justice, and humanity for All! Highlights in the experience: In April 2021, I was a speaker at the rally to Stop Asian Hate. Following the rally, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City has signed the proclamation of AAPI Day Against Bullying which is May 18. On that day, I organized a Dance Party Celebrating AAPI Day Against Bullying in the pedestrian mall in support of the city's decision to fight against human bullying. In September 2021, I was one of the organizers of the "Music of Love" concert for Charity. Asian student musicians from West High School and Northwest Junior High School performed at the concert raising over $2,000. The funds were donated to the local non-profit organization, United Action for Youth (UAY). UAY provides services for teenagers 12-18 years. It is a place for the youth to have a voice and give back creatively to their community. This event made the future generation of the Chinese community aware of the importance of helping other peers of different ethnic backgrounds and aided in bridging the gap. In January 2022 on behalf of the Iowa City Area Chinese Association (ICACA), I applied and was awarded a $3000 grant from the Human Rights Commission. This award will allow the ICACA to host and celebrate a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Englert Theater on January 22, 2023. In April 2022, I organized "An Evening of Performing Arts" featuring traditional song and dance in honor of .Asian Cultural Heritage and the Holiday Spirit. The event was celebrated by greater than 200 attendees and included notable guests such as the Mayors of both Coralville and Iowa City. Ten youth participants that worked on securing the ICCSD Lunar New Year petition and the "Music of Hope" nominated by me, were awarded the Human Rights Youth Award of Iowa City. The awards showed the youth involved hard work pays off. In May 2022, I cosponsored the "Music of Hope" event with the Iowa City Public Library in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. This event and "An Evening of Performing Arts" are two in a series of events highlighting traditional music and dance performances initiated by me in meeting my goals of community unification and awareness expansion. I was also awarded the ICACA Presidents Volunteer Certification allowing me to certify the youth volunteers for their contribution to bettering the community and Human Rights. These young people were recognized on a national level. I am also a financial contributor to the Cadenza Music Charity Club at West High School which has worked tirelessly to raise money for Ukraine. The experience demonstrates why I am qualified to represent the spirit of the Iowa City community: inclusive, caring, and devoted. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I will use the City Council position as my platform to reach out and work with all communities, minorities, and immigrants and show them that everyone who is willing to work hard has a chance to succeed. By working together we can succeed in making Iowa City a better place to live. The Johnson County Inclusive Economic Development Plan (IEDP) is being translated to Chinese, Spanish, and French. I was asked to translate the plan to Chinese. The IEDP shows that immigrant small business owners need more help in legal, accounting, and banking services While the Asian community is the largest minority community in Iowa City, it is not well represented as a voting bloc. The current process requires simplification and it is imperative voters know where, when to vote and understand the ballots to know for whom they are voting. I would like to set up an immigrant office to build a bridge between municipal govemment and immigrant residents. As a university town, Iowa City is increasingly becoming more diverse However, resources to aid the diverse groups are limited. I would like to give these groups an inroad to municipal government by creating internships. In addition, I would like to set up public service corps and create a multi -culture center in the heart of downtown Iowa City which will also aid in creating employment opportunities. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* Over the years, I had the privilege of meeting City Council members Laura Bergus, Megan Alter, and Shawn Harmsen and I was part of Mayor Teague's 2021 campaign team in his re-election bid. After speaking with these individuals, I became interested in the City Council. Their ideology and what they want to do for the city is in alignment with my ideology To further understand city government, I familiarized myself with the Iowa City Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2023-2028 in addition to the Iowa City Comprehensive plan for 2030. I took it a step further and compared these plans with the 2022 Johnson County Economic Development Plan, the City of Coralville Budget for Fiscal Year 2023, the City of Coralville Community Plan 2014, the City of Tiffin 2018 Comprehensive Plan, and the City of North Liberty comprehensive plan 2013. The Iowa City plans emphasize education, arts, science, and culture The City of Coralville seems to support small business owners, more parks, and new family housing developments. The Tiffin and North Liberty plans emphasize more of a small-town atmosphere. Iowa City has the University and is taking advantage of the educational opportunities and job availability to provide opportunities for more people striving to create better living conditions Potential Conflicts of Interest The general rule is that no persons who exercise or have exercised any functions or responsibilities with respect to federally funded activities, or who are in a position to participate in the decision -making process or gain inside information with regard to such activities, may obtain a financial interest or benefit from a federally —assisted activity, or have a financial interest in any contract, subcontract, or agreement with respect to a federally -assisted activity, or with respect to the proceeds of the federally -assisted activity, either for themselves or those with whom they have business or immediate family ties, during their tenure or for one year thereafter. I am actively involved in many non-profit organizations within the community, including United Way, 5224Good, Altrusa, Shelter House, Domestic Violence Intervention Project, Johnson County Retired Teachers, and The Foundation for the Trades. My years of experience and devotion to this community will continue through my membership on the city council. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I love the Iowa City Community. I am supportive of the services and programs we offer our residents. I have utilized many of these services throughout my lifetime. Our library, the senior center, animal care and adoption center, public art, Summer of the Arts, UNESCO City of Literature Book Festival, and farmer's market provide valuable services to so many in Iowa City and throughout the county and state. As someone who has benefited from these services, I feel I can offer helpful feedback regarding what is working well and opportunities for improvement. I also understand how the laws passed at the state level can affect the city in both positive and negative ways. Our relationships with state law makers, county officials, the school district, and neighboring cities is critical in furthering our goals in Iowa City. I have a good working relationship with many of those lawmakers and county, city and school officials in Johnson County and neighboring cities. The council must also have a good working relationship with the businesses and non -profits in our community. As someone who has volunteered and supported these businesses, I believe my skill sets would be helpful in promoting economic development in Iowa City. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* As a former member of the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Commission, I understand the importance of all of the boards and commissions that operate within the city. My membership on that commission motivated me to work with others in our community to establish the first girls' softball league in Iowa City. I am so proud of the facilities and opportunities we provide to both young and old in this community. I have viewed and attended numerous council meetings over the years, and I am very supportive of the city's efforts to provide more affordable housing to our residents. I am also very interested in efforts to provide quality, affordable, accessible childcare for our families in Iowa City and would like to provide my expertise in how that could be accomplished. Iowa City has some of the best services available in the state. I am so appreciative of the staff and workers who provide these services. Everyone is important, from those who clear our streets from snow, pick up our recycling and garbage, mow the grass in our parks, staff our parking ramps, maintain the ped mall, staff the landfill, and monitor our water and sewage systems. These critical employees work with the city council, planners and administers to make this city one of the top cities in the nation to live, work and raise a family. I want to be a part of this team of dedicated public servants. For the past three years I have been part of an organizational anti -racism audit team for an advocacy organization. This work has repeatedly underscored the importance of accountability to community, particularly attending to the intersecting oppressions of white supremacy, patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, and economic oppression. I have served as a pastor with congregations for 12 years, and in my current position with a campus spiritual community for three years. In that time, I learned the importance of deep listening and the responsibility of holding leadership and speaking to and at times on behalf of a community. I worked to nurture and advance a common vision that met the various interests of the people in the congregation and the surrounding community. I also gained experience leading staff supervision, crafting budgets, and facilitating committee work. As part of my continuing education I was trained in conflict transformation by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* The City exists to ensure the well-being of its residents and those who live and work here. My commitment to accountability and experience listening for interests will aid the Council in responding to emerging needs and in prioritizing equity and accessibility in long term planning. A budget is a moral document, assigning concrete figures to the values and priorities of a community. I will use my familiarity with organizational budgeting and finances to advance a budget that accurately reflects the best hopes of our city. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* The Iowa City Council holds authority for guiding the overall life of our community. It is directly accountable to the people through election, and appoints and oversees the city manager, select other city staff positions, and many boards and commissions of the city. Council works closely with the city manager and their staff, who are responsible to carry out the administration of the city within the bounds set by the Council. One of the primary ways the Council guides the administration of the city is through the budget process. I am interested in applying for an appointment to the Iowa City City Council because I believe my perspective will add value to the Council and my unique experiences have prepared me for the important work taking place within the City government. While attending Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, I had the honor of being selected to work inside the Iowa Statehouse as a clerk for Senator Amanda Ragan (SD-27; Mason City). As Sen. Ragan's clerk, I was responsible for tracking legislative bills on five Senate committees including Appropriations, Human Resources, Agriculture, and Rules and Administration. In addition, Sen. Ragan trusted me to handle her constituency correspondence, which was educational and enjoyable. Outside of the Statehouse, I was the policy director for the lowa Youth Climate Strike. Composed of a 10-member team of Des Moines area high school students, we focused on developing 18 Iowa -specific legislative suggestions to improve the local environment and inform as well as activate students about environmental issues. While attending the University of Iowa, I joined the University's student government as the City Liaison. As one of my responsibilities in USG, I attended the bi-weekly City Council meetings and updated the Council members about the concerns of our student population along with suggestions to ameliorate those concerns. One example of our collaboration with the Council was the issue relates to student housing; both the availability and affordability of such. Together, we designed and developed 1,500 magnets printed with housing -related resources which were then distributed to students and Iowa City residents We also worked with local media and businesses to generate awareness about these resources. To address this matter further, in the summer of 2022, the new City Liaison and I worked to revitalize the affordable lease gap housing program through the Iowa Memorial Union to host 30+ students in need as well as coordinated with Hancher Auditorium to offer 100 free parking spaces. These efforts are meaningful to the student population and could only happen through a collaboration of public and private interests. There is more work to be done, and I feel confident that as a City Council member, I would be a strong advocate for the interests of our local business community (including landlords) and our student population. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I believe that having a student on IC City Council will provide a unique perspective and opportunity to demonstrate the genuine interest that the Council feels toward student concerns and inclusivity. Maintaining harmony between our business community, local residents, and student population is critical to the continued growth and prosperity of Iowa City. This is what I am committed to seeing happen. It would be an honor to be able to continue working with the City Council to address affordable housing and sustainability as two areas of particular interest. As a Council member, I would hope to host meetings between the new USG City Liaison team with landlords, as well as with city staff regarding alcohol harm reduction and collaborate with Council on sustainability goals including amending and addressing ways in which the University inhibits city-wide initiatives. Other priorities would include accessible mental health services. late -night bus routing, and reducing food insecurity for residents in need. I believe that these are community problems that require community solutions. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* City Council is Iowa City's publicly elected government body whose responsibilities include developing policies and programs with taxpayer funding (via sales and property) for community services and economic development. The general goal of our City Council is to support a thriving community that attracts permanent residents, businesses/employers, and short-term residents alike. For nearly two years, I have witnessed the City Council's work regarding zoning, sustainability, and diversity. As the student liaison, I feel that I developed collaborative and personal working relationships with Council members. Through these partnerships, I learned the structure of city government and its authority as it relates to commerce, housing, and attracting new business to Iowa City. I love Iowa City and would like to join the Council in order to continue that partnership and help our city reach its fullest potential. My Civic Engagement earned me special recognition by the American Institute of Architects as a Citizen Architect. Most importantly, I live in Iowa City. I Work in Iowa City, and I love Iowa City. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* As a good listener, creative problem solver, and articulate communicator I have a proven track record of bringing people together, building consensus, and solving problems. As an architect I work with multiple governmental bodies -- including cities, towns, counties, and school districts -- to develop strategic plans, pass bond referendums, and design buildings. Iowa City is the best city in America, but we can be better if we learn from our peers. Iowa City can plan smarter, build more resiliently, and make our public spaces more inclusive. I will encourage wise investment in public infrastructure, facilities, and fiscal reserves. Through good planning we can mitigate the negative effects of State Property Tax Reform and invest in infrastructure for the future --all while preserving our Aaa Moody's Bond Rating. I will leverage my relationships with Iowa City's robust ecosystem of non -profits to promote an inclusive and resilient economy throughout the city If we effectively collaborate with non -profits, Johnson County, Iowa City Schools, Kirkwood, the University of Iowa, and neighboring cities we can increase affordable childcare options, attract good jobs to our community, and help those in transition with skills training. I will leverage my lived experience as a member of LGBTQIA+ community to advance social justice, racial equity and human rights. I will listen to diverse voices in our community and use my privilege to elevate community leaders with different lived experiences. I will share my technical knowledge as an Architect to help accelerate the decarbonization of our city and exceed our Climate Action Goals We can become a national Leader in Climate Action While we decarbonize, we must simultaneously develop and redevelop with resilience in mind. I will use my construction knowledge and planning experience to foster compact, authentic, vibrant neighborhoods and affordable housing throughout the city. We must quickly and carefully develop safe, affordable, and desirable housing throughout the city. I will call upon my professional colleagues to consider the affordable housing crisis with every new project they design and challenge local builders and developers to participate in the development of diverse housing types. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* Our city council is a body that serves the whole community and a body that demonstrates, through its actions, the way we want our citizens to treat one another: With love, grace, and respect. The seven people on the city council have a responsibility to listen and act with integrity and presume that our fellow city councilors are also acting with virtue. Our city council depends upon a dedicated and informed professional staff as well as civic -minded commissioners and board members. That staff has lifetimes of experience, and it behooves us to respect their advice. The commissioners have a deep knowledge of current issues, and it is our responsibility to trust their recommendations It is also a counselor's responsibility to ask hard questions and challenge the status quo Our city council has well-defined strategic priorities and those have been updated in the most recent 2023-2028 Strategic Plans. Those priorities can only be achieved if we respect the work of past city councils and if the current city council prepares future councils to succeed at those goals Our city council must pass the nearly $220M (proposed) budget for fiscal year 2024. This city council must work creatively to overcome past and future property tax reforms. The citizens of Iowa City city want high -quality services, but legislators in Des Moines have limited the City's ability to provide those services. They unloaded some stuff from the moving truck into our then -house on Glendale Court and then we went out to eat at Mazzio's Pizza now long since departed from its location at the corner of First Avenue and Lower Muscatine Road. With a brief three- year absence for a sojourn to graduate school up in Minnesota, I've lived here more or less my entire life. I got a job here. I purchased a house here. I have a family that's growing up here and going to school here. I am deeply embedded in this community I graduated from Iowa City High School in 200'1. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Political Science in 2006, following it up with an MA in Political Science from Minnesota State University -Mankato. As a state -certified 911 Dispatcher, I have a unique, bird's eye view of the challenges facing the unhoused population in Iowa City as well as the inequities that people of color face in our community every day. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* One of the advantages of having lived here so long is that you become very aware of how a community can change. Sometimes, it's for the best and sometimes it's not. It's very easy to get lost in nostalgia. I remember downtown being the focal point of our community growing up. I remember things like Pizza Hut and Great Midwestern Ice Cream. I remember Aladdin's Castle and an actual mall downtown. Change is inevitable with the passage of time: we can't go back, but we're left with the inescapable feeling that the community doesn't feel as connected as it once did. How can we remedy that? I want to encourage the revitalization of areas like the Iowa City Marketplace and explore bringing more vibrant economic development to other parts of our city. I want to advocate for real affordable housing— not just a few units tacked on as an afterthought to yet another large, fancy high-rise project- but more housing so that people who work in our community might actually be able to afford to live here I believe that we can only make our democracy better from the ground up I would work to advocate for and hopefully implement ranked choice voting for our local elections. (Also, on a perhaps less important note: given that Cedar Rapids just got itself a nice new flag, I think it's high time for the City of Literature to follow suit, don't you?) Lastly and perhaps most importantly of all, I want to listen and learn. At the end of the day, I don't own a business. I live here, make my home here and raise my family here. There are plenty of people just like me who do the same and feel like their voices don't matter I want to be able to make sure that they do What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* What's my current knowledge of the City Council? I freely admit that as a community member, I would have a lot of learning to do if appointed to this position. I would have to learn how things work and not just complain about how they're not working and that's a very hard concept for a lot of people to wrap their heads around. I do know that I am, at heart, a solutions -oriented person. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than actually solving a problem. I don't want to soapbox about problems. I don't want to watch problems fester and grow. I want to be part of a consensus that will hopefully solve the problems in our community and help encourage its continued distinctiveness. In short, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position, and look forward to the opportunity to discuss this position more with you in January. Thank you for your time. I am well acquainted with the rhythm of daily life in Iowa City, the struggles faced by members of our community, and the services available. I also know what it means to make do with what you have, to go without, to be saved by public services, and to provide services for others in need. I have been a City of Iowa City Climate Ambassador, Iowa City Community Police Review Board (CPRB) Chair, University of Iowa Safety and Security Committee Chair; and Voting Member of the University of Iowa Council for the Status of Women. I have also served on Title IX, Reimagining Campus Safety, and Community Engagement Subcommittees and the University of Iowa Center For Disabilities and Development Unit Council and DEI Committee. In 2019, my experiences in Iowa City and the testimonies of others led me to create Corridor Community Action Network (CCAN), which I have since led as Executive Director. CCAN coordinates and provides direct services with a mission to "facilitate resident participation and empowerment, raising awareness about opportunities to improve the quality of life for all individuals in the Iowa Corridor". Since 1 founded CCAN we have achieved nonprofit status, grown a highly engaged social media audience of well over 2,000 people, and provided a continually growing catalog of services to the community. These services have included clothing hundreds of community members via our free mobile clothing closet, disseminating disaster response and community service information following the 2020 derecho, providing free school supply -filled backpacks for ICCSD students and free cab rides for voters, and, critically, helping other local bodies coordinate and provide direct responses with greater effect. CCAN regularly partners with organizations such as The Lena Project and Iowa City Catholic Worker on projects and initiatives, facilitates partnerships between groups, and organizes multi -organization events like CCAN-Con, a one -day community engagement and workshop event focused on implementing our core mission. As an experienced and credible leader in Iowa City's non-profit and civic communities, I have spent years establishing and maintaining relationships with organizational representatives across the state and have improved cross -organizational communication throughout the Corridor One way I do this is by leading monthly live - streamed networking meetings with participants such as Horizons, Safe Families for Children, League of Women Voters of Johnson County, One Iowa, Together We Achieve, Domestic Violence Intervention Program, Progress Iowa, and Free Lunch of Iowa City. Through this work and my work at the University of Iowa, I have promoted alliances with many local advocacy groups and am excited for the opportunity to provide those allies and the greater Iowa City Community with a voice on the Council. I know that fostering such relationships exponentially increases the good we can do because I've done it and I've seen the results. Through CCAN, my 23 years of residency, 16 years as a University of Iowa employee, and leadership experience within both the University and the City, I have strengthened my commitment to making Iowa City a better place to live and have developed the insight and leadership skills necessary to continue that pursuit as a City Councilor If appointed, I will represent our community by applying my understanding of residents' wants and needs to my work and by regularly engaging with community members in ways that allow me to see them, hear them, and amplify their voices. What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* I am confident that the alliances I have built throughout the Corridor and the State will be of further value to Iowa City if I am seated on the Council. Collaboratively, the City Council and the organizations I work with every day can advance the safety, security, and prosperity of all Iowa City residents. I am enlivened by the opportunity to help establish and reinforce relationships between the City and the crucial organizations that serve its residents in such areas as affordable housing, public transportation, food security, land use, environmental sustainability, crisis management, youth programming, community safety and accessibility, equity, and public health. My lived experiences in Iowa City and my current roles within the University of Iowa and the community leave me uniquely positioned to view problems and solutions through a broad and actionable lens. For example, in my time on the CPRB I have worked with others to improve accessibility by recommending the addition of an online filing option and the extension of the complaint filing deadline from 90 to 180 days. I will provide the City Council with a clearer window into the experiences, circumstances, and challenges of the most vulnerable people in our community and help address related factors through my connections with experts and networks that can help us enact practical, evidence -based solutions. Additionally, my time in the previously mentioned leadership positions and committees has provided me with direct experience in project management, collaboration, negotiation, serving as part of a team of representatives, policy formation, problem -solving, community outreach and engagement, process improvement, and facilitating meetings subject to Iowa Chapter 21 Open Meeting Law. Having taken full advantage of educational opportunities available to University of Iowa employees, I have completed TeamSTEPPS training (evidenced -based ways of "improving communication and teamwork skills") and earned a "Building University of Iowa Leadership for Diversity" Certificate. Through my role on the CPRB, I have also gained experience in meeting with international delegates as part of the Global Ties Professional Foreign Exchange Program. This background has prepared me for the types of challenges that City Councilors face and will allow me to hit the ground running to work with other council members for the betterment of Iowa City. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?' The Iowa City Council consists of seven members. These include Mayor Bruce Teague and three other at -large members, as well as one each from districts A, 6, and C. The seat I am applying for is an at -large seat currently held by Janice Weiner, who is leaving her term early to serve at the state level. This seat will be filled by appointment. I regularly disseminate City Council work session and meeting information, including agenda and Zoom links, to an audience of thousands via CCAN Generally, work sessions begin at 4:00 pm in Emma J Harvat Hall at City Hall (410 E. Washington St) on the first and third Tuesday of the month, and formal meetings at 6:00 pm the same evening. Zoom participation is available for the public to attend formal meetings. There are also occasional special and joint entity meetings, scheduled as needed. The preliminary agenda for 2023 is available online and I have checked for conflicts and entered all dates into my calendar, knowing they are subject to change Being a member of the City Council is a job that involves a much larger commitment than reading agendas and attending the aforementioned meetings. Researching topics and approaches used by other cities, preparing for meetings, and being present and responsive within the community we serve and represent take an extensive amount of time and energy I am fully prepared to devote that time and energy to serving this role within our community. As the Council begins the crucial work of finalizing the 2024 budget, I look forward to working on the issues highlighted in the "Year-end Annual Comprehensive Financial Report" and "FY2024 Proposed Budget', including vital aspects of the Capital Improvement Program such as ADA accessibility, parks improvement and maintenance, traffic calming, and implementation of the Bicycle Master Plan. I believe affordable housing expansion and facility, transit interchange, and bus stop improvements warrant further discussion to ensure we are making the most of the ''Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act" and other forms of funding mentioned in the Iowa League of Cities "Budget Special Report 2023-24", particularly in light of recent legislative changes that will result in a loss of tax revenue. As a City of Iowa City Climate Ambassador, I am mindful of the guiding principles of Iowa City's Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, developed to help us meet Iowa City's Climate Action Goal to reduce 2005-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26 to 28 percent by 2025 and 80 percent by 2050". Meeting those targets through the recommended actions should be at the forefront of budgetary and policy decisions as we implement our strategic plan. Overall, I have a firm grasp on the direction this City is heading, its Comprehensive Plan, new strategic plan, and established goals, and I am sager to do my part in making Iowa City the best it can be Potential Conflicts of Interest The general rule is that no persons who exercise or have exercised any functions or responsibilities with respect to federally funded activities, or who are in a position to participate in the decision -making process or gain inside information with regard to such activities, may obtain a financial interest or benefit from a federally —assisted activity, or have a financial interest in any contract, subcontract, or agreement with respect to a federally -assisted activity, or with respect to the proceeds of the federally -assisted activity, either for themselves or those with whom they have business or immediate family ties, during their tenure or for one year thereafter Section 362.5 of the Code of Iowa generally prohibits, with certain important exceptions, a member of City Council from having an interest in a City contract. My wife and I opened a restaurant at age 22 in Flagstaff, AZ, ran that for 3 years, and then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where I opened a vegan Mexican food truck. After 2 years in Phoenix, we relocated to Bend, Oregon, which is where I started a digital marketing agency. We lived there for 6 years and then moved back to my home state of Iowa... and chose Iowa City specifically to raise our children as it is a liberal pocket and highly educated and diverse. Diversity was important to us, as my wife is from Mexico, and we've experienced first-hand (in my youth in Dubuque...) the opposite in rural Oregon. I've traveled many countries in my lifetime, and most recently we stayed 1 month in Italy and then 1 month in Spain with our two children. The reason I bring all of this up is 1) I know what it's like to be a small business owner, the needs and challenges and community support and 2) I've experience different cultures, within the U.S., and outside of the U.S., and understand the importance of diversity and a liberal, educated community. I think I would bring an open mind with leadership mentality -- my employees at my past businesses would commend my ability to stay calm under pressure. We moved here with my digital business and I'm building a professional network in Iowa. So, I'm now a proud local business owner with clients around the world -- and an active member of the Iowa City Area Business Partnership. Thank you for your time and consideration! What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* Outside the box thinking, a fresh perspective, a level head and enthusiastic member of the community. I'm here to raise my kids and build roots and want it to be the best place to live possible. As a small business owner and a father I think I have a good state of mind to help Iowa City continue to be a liberal, interesting, intelligent, literary community that residents and visitors will appreciate. I understand tourism very well, I'm a published travel writer, and have written for Travel Oregon, AmTrak, and other regional publications. I've lived in very touristy towns, from Flagstaff, AZ, to Bend, OR, and I bring a lot of great ideas from my personal experience and marketing career. What is your present knowledge of the City Council?* I am a big fan of Mayor Bruce Teague, and I've had some positive (albeit online) interactions with other council members. My impression is that it is a personable, friendly, and optimistic group of people working towards the common good of Iowa City. I'm 35 years old and my political leanings have always been liberal Democrat but I do see both sides of every political endeavor and argument and strive to put myself in other's shoes. We suffer from one of the tightest housing markets in Iowa, subject to heavy influence from large, out-of-state property -holding companies that take advantage of the state government's inadequate investment in student housing to jack up market rates. A PDF copy of my current resume can be viewed here: tinyurl.com/DunnCouncilResume What contributions do you feel you can make to the City Council and to the residents of Iowa City* As an activist, accessibility, transparency, and the elevation of others are particularly important values of mine. Potential Conflicts of Interest The general rule is that no persons who exercise or have exercised any functions or responsibilities with respect to federally funded activities, or who are in a position to participate in the decision -making process or gain inside information with regard to such activities, may obtain a financial interest or benefit from a federally — assisted activity, or have a financial interest in any contract, subcontract, or agreement with respect to a federally -assisted activity, or with respect to the proceeds of the federally -assisted activity, either for themselves or those with whom they have business or immediate family ties, during their tenure or for one year thereafter. Her level of activity in the community is exceptional for a working class person, and it has earned her a great deal of respect. Citizens of lower income backgrounds rarely have the opportunity to run for office, so this appointment is a chance to help break down the class disparities between council and the general public. From there, I learned about her efforts to help unite community programming and social change through her nonprofit, Corridor Community Action Network. These, along with her work on the UI Council for the Status of Women, among several other endeavors, give Mandi a finger on the pulse of what is happening behind the scenes in the City. As you all know, this is incredibly important when making sure that our underserved communities are represented. Mandi is experienced not only on paper, but also in life. Although I can't share her personal portfolio, please know that as a woman who has experienced many of the same things, it is comforting to know that her tacit and lived knowledge can act as a guiding light for future programs and City funds. Her kindness and empathy for others pulls from a great well of highs and lows that will be a complimentary asset to the wealth of knowledge and compassion that already exists on the Council. When you have whittled down the list to your collective top 5 people, maybe one of the questions in your discussions with each of them is about their core values. It is these core values that they will bounce any new issue off of and guide their process and vote. I hope the top values you look for will be equity, fairness, accountability, transparency, and willingness to read the packet! May you have many good choices. Mandi is more than qualified for a position on the city council. She founded the Corridor Community Action Network in 2019, which fills much -needed niches in our community such as providing a centralized location for other organizations to connect, disseminating information to a local audience of 2,341 people, and creating connections with other local and state-wide organizations. Mandi is already familiar with the processes and procedures of local government and will be able to make full use of her position from day one. She is an active and effective member of the community; for example, she served on the Iowa City Police Review board, where she drafted and led changes to the ICPD and city policy that improved residents' access to the filing and complaint processes. She also serves on the Community Engagement subcommittee and the Center for Disabilities and Development Unit Council. Mandi's personal life reflects her commitment to her community. She is a skilled networker and keeps strong relationships with people from all walks of life. She has shown a willingness to listen to those whose experiences differ from hers and create solutions that will benefit all. She strives to prioritize those who are most effected by socioeconomic issues. She is a pillar of our community, and as a city council member she will continue to uphold the progress and passion that Iowa City stands for. As an Iowa City resident, there is no one I would rather have in the city council seat. As I was actively involved in his primary campaign for the Iowa legislature, I would like to share my experiences and thoughts. I first met Andrew at Pridefest in 2021 when we were both working at the Johnson County Democrats' booth. I had a long and thoughtful conversation with him and when he eventually told me he was running in the primary for my Iowa House district, I actually went home, found his website and made my first donation to his campaign. In addition, I was so impressed by Andrew, I sent personal letters to approximately 90o Democrats in the district. If you yourself have ever had even one conversation with him, you will understand why I found him incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful on the issues and passionate about pursuing a life of public service. Andrew would bring many valuable perspectives to the table, not the least of which is as a young person at a time when the young are stepping up to address problems that have too long been neglected. It would be incredibly sad if we were to let his talents and enthusiasm go to waste. Additionally, as he states in his application, he would bring the perspective of a renter in a city where rents have continually risen despite more and more rental units becoming available. Numerous academic studies are showing that the lack of affordable housing is not as simple as too few homes and rental units being available. Good decision -making by any public body requires the ability and willingness to study the problems, including identifying disparate impacts on different populations, the compassion and sense of urgency to pursue solutions to these problems, and the courage to face down powerful interests to better serve even the most vulnerable people's needs. Andrew is as capable as any person I have ever met in these respects. Also, as indicated in his application, he has a good understanding and appreciation for the importance of teamwork and good faith discussions in the decision -making process. I strongly urge you to provide Andrew with this opportunity and am highly confident that given the opportunity, Andrew would serve the Iowa City Community extremely well. Mandi's experience working and living in Iowa City for several years had equipped her well to start the position with necessary experience and passion for the role. Her abilities to listen to and network across organizations, prioritize community issues as needed, and create meaningful solutions would be great qualities to add to the ICCC team. Above all, I believe Mandi's want to fill the role says the most. Her level of empathy to all our Iowa City neighborhoods has left her seemingly with no choice other than to continuously place herself in positions to advocate for, gain knowledge on, and attempt to solve any barriers facing the community and it's most vulnerable members. Please consider nominating Amanda Remington to Iowa City City Council and accepting her application. With her, we can build a better Iowa City. Please take extra care opening any links or attachments. ** Dear Iowa City Council Members, My name is Kyle Kopf, I am an Iowa City resident, and I had the privilege of working as campaign manager for Andrew Dunn's recent State House campaign. I have known Andrew in a professional and personal capacity for over 6 years. We served together on the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council and advocated for gun legislation on the State Team of March for our Lives Iowa. During that time, Andrew became my close friend. I spent almost every day with Andrew for 9 months during the primary campaign. Family aside, you will be hard- pressed to find somebody who has more experience working with Andrew. Without any reservation, I hope that you appoint him to the open City Council seat. I am not emailing you with an elaborate policy pitch nor am I attempting to detail the political implications of appointing Andrew. I am asking you to appoint Andrew for the simple reason that he is a good person. Example #1 - During the primary campaign, Andrew never described the campaign as being "his." Andrew always included me when talking about our campaign goals and vision. For him, it was "our" campaign. Even when I described the campaign as being his, he would remind me that the campaign was "ours." Example #2 - A few months into the campaign, I had an event in my life that triggered a phase of bad mental health. Andrew comforted me through tears and he could not have been more understanding. He gave me time off from the campaign and did not stress about my missing work. Andrew valued my well-being and treated me with respect. Example #3 - During the campaign, we would frequently make late -night runs to Chipotie, Freddy's, or other fast-food restaurants. I witnessed Andrew exercise patience and treat workers with kindness. I have never seen Andrew talk down to anybody, in food service or otherwise. Example #4 - After reports of a mass shooting in the United States, I could tell Andrew was beyond distraught. Even though the shooting occurred halfway across the country, Andrew felt incredibly saddened and outraged. This is the empathy that drives him to public service. These examples are not exhaustive. The point is that we should all want somebody with Andrew's character representing us on the City Council. I want somebody who always acts with compassion, respect, and kindness. Andrew is not in this for himself. If you have any questions about Andrew or the contents of this message, feel free to give me a call or reply to this email. Thank you for all of your work. Mandi and her organization Corridor Community Action Network have become a pillar in this city as they work tirelessly to uphold citizen rights, clothe our community, and network with other area agencies to fill social and fiscal gaps that exist between us. I have put a great deal of consideration into sending this message, and I hope that you are hearing from people across our community as you make decisions about appointing one of our neighbors to fill the seat vacated by our new State Senator. This message is in support of two of the many excellent candidates who have presented themselves for consideration. I have worked personally with both and feel that they would each, in their own ways, bring new perspectives and connections to our council. Mandi Remington works tirelessly and without fanfare to fill the gaps in our community. She identifies areas of unfilled need and makes connections, seeks opportunities, and harnesses creativity to efficiently help people. In addition, she will bring in the possibility of uplifting those in our community who engage and embrace a mutual aid approach to neighbors and community. Mandi believes in making Iowa City the best it can be for everyone, and focusing on ensuring that those with the greatest struggles are cared for. Sean McRoberts is a compassionate individual with years of experience in creating spaces that embrace people in just the way that we want Iowa City to embrace its residents. They take seriously the charge to care for others, and, in my experience, they are detail -oriented while still able to consider the broader impacts and potential complications of decisions. While I have never known them to be a doe -eye optimist, they have brought calm and reason to every interaction we have had. Thank you for your time and consideration. Mandi founded the Corridor Community Action Network, with a mission to uplift the work of organizations and programs within the Iowa City and Corridor area. Our organization, Great Plains Action Society has benefited from CCAN. It has created a community of care and increased our outreach in the area. Her work has made a big difference for many orgs like ours and we are very grateful for this. Mandi is a single mother and works a full time job yet she has managed to accomplish so much in just the past couple years. She is a skilled community organizer and has real gifts in bringing people together to find creative and material solutions to challenges our residents face. She is a skilled communicator as well - both interpersonally and through her use of social media groups to help area residents be informed about community resources, ways to volunteer, and learning opportunities. I recently described her to someone as a community goods aggregator - collecting and connecting people to needed resources and ways to serve in the community. Her dedication to equity and to improving the quality of life for our community, her track record of bringing together a diverse range of community groups through the Corridor Community Action Network, and her skills in open and transparent communication would make her an incredible asset to the city if appointed to the city council, and I highly recommend her.
