Arab American Heritage Month
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, for over a century, Arab Americans have been making valuable
contributions to virtually every aspect of American society: in medicine, law, business,
education, technology, government, military service, culture; and
Whereas, since migrating to America, individuals of Arab descent have shared their
rich culture and traditions with neighbors and friends, while also setting fine examples of
model citizens and public servants; and
Whereas, they brought with them to America their resilient family values, strong work
ethic, dedication to education, and diversity in faith and creed that have added strength to
our great democracy; and
Whereas, Arab Americans have also enriched our society by sharing in the
entrepreneurial American spirit that makes our nation free and prosperous; and
Whereas, the history of Arab Americans in the US. remains neglected or defaced by
misconceptions, bigotry, and anti-Arab hate in the forms of crimes and speech; and
Whereas, Arab American issues, such as civil rights abuses, harmful stereotyping, and
bullying must be combated in the forms of education and awareness; and
Whereas, they join all Americans in the desire to see a peaceful and diverse society,
where every individual is treated equally and feels safe; and
Whereas, the incredible contributions and heritage of Arab Americans have helped us
build a better nation.
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, announce that the Arab
America Foundation celebrates the contributions Arab Americans have made to society
and hereby proclaim April 2023 to be

Arbor Day
City of Iowa City
d\ PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the coming of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree planting for
beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people; and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting
and preservation of trees; and
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, reduce
pollution, lower energy costs, and enhance the economic vitality of business areas; and
Whereas, because trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, having a diverse
and healthy tree population constitutes a major part of Iowa City's effort to mitigate
against climate change; and
Whereas, trees can provide natural air conditioning; the evaporation from a single
tree can produce the cooling effect of 10 room size air conditioners operating 20 hours
a day; and
Whereas, evergreen trees can be used to reduce wind speed and thus loss of heat
from our homes in the winter by as much as 10 to 50 percent.
Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
April 28, 2023, to be
Arbor Day
in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to participate in tree planting and preservation
projects throughout the year.

Sharon Malheiro Day
City of Iowa City
, PROCLAMATION
Whereas, on April 10, 2023, the State of Iowa and the nation suffered a great loss in I
the death of Sharon Malheiro; and
Whereas, as a graduate of Drake Law School who began practicing in 1990, Ms.
Malheiro spent her life fighting for LGBTQ+ Iowans, providing uncounted hours of pro
bono legal and advocacy work; and
Whereas, beginning by gathering a group who succeeded in passing an anti-
discrimination ordinance protecting LGBTQ+ people in the City of Des Moines in 1991,
she went on to co-found the statewide non-profit advocacy organization OneIowa, which
ultimately led to her coordinating with national advocacy groups to bring the landmark
case Varnum v. Brien, resulting in Iowa being the third state in the nation to declare
same-sex marriage legal; and
Whereas, once that monumental goal was accomplished, she did not rest, but
continued to fight for advances in LGBTQ+ healthcare, workplace equality, inclusivity,
and leadership, with a more recent focus on resisting discrimination against transgender
people in particular; and
Whereas, without Sharon Malheiro, the landscape of LGBTQ+ life in Iowa would be
vastly different and certainly far worse than it is today; and
Whereas, although greatly saddened by her death, a new generation of leaders
continues on the trail she blazed, inspired by her vision, commitment, and drive to
resolutely resist ongoing efforts to harm LGBTQ+ people in Iowa.
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April
18th, 2023 to be
Sharon Malheiro Day
in Iowa City, and encourage community members to celebrate her legacy, to continue her
work by advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and to honor her spirit by fighting
oppression wherever and whenever it occurs. :—.5AvtAitiz_„ ,„--,,,,,_
