Climate Action Commission Board Member Information: Eligible Preference on first choice (If multiple boards are being applied for.) Interests & Experiences Experience and/or activities which you feel qualify you for this position: As a journalist and freelance writer with more than a decade of experience, I have written extensively about sustainability --particularly as it pertains to urban design and the built environment. Some of the sustainability topics I've explored in my writings include tactical urbanism, green buildings, green cities, green certification standards, green building codes, New Urbanism (human -scale city design), walkability, green roofs, embodied carbon, transit oriented development, adaptive reuse, suburban sprawl, and large- scale applications of green building materials such as Cross -Laminated Timber. I also reported on/participated in the Standing Rock anti-DAPL protests of 2016. As a member of the commission, I would strive to bring sustainable urban design to the forefront by pushing for greater walkability across the length and breadth of the city, adaptive reuse of derelict buildings, progressive housing policies, and the creation of a Green Urban Corps that would educate and engage youths in service of citywide climate initiatives. What is your present knowledge of each advisory board you are interested in? I am aware of the commission's existence and some of its initiatives around town. Bottom Line: Sustainability and climate action are of utmost importance to me, and nothing would please me more than being able to use my skills as a communicator to push for a more sustainable future in the city I call home. I'm also a great writer and communicator, especially when it comes to explaining complex ideas to children or the general public. What is your present knowledge of each advisory board you are interested in? Before I even knew about the Climate Action Commission, I was able to feel its footprint when deciding to live here. Iowa City is a uniquely sustainable place, both in its design and in its maintenance, and it ties these practices together with community involvement. I've enjoyed going to the Climate Fest events in the past, as well as more casual displays of Iowa City eco -awareness: farmers markets, biking trails, the Prarie Preview, and the like. I know the Climate Action Commission exists to enable the city's climate goals and has a special interest in energy conservation (winter insulation), carbon emissions (net zero 2050 plan), and equity (housing and public areas). I know the panel has successfully set a trajectory that, if maintained should meet a lot of these goals. I would be honored to help along that progress. Climate Action Commission Board Member Information: Eligible Preference on first choice (If multiple boards are being applied for.) Interests & Experiences Experience and/or activities which you feel qualify you for this position: As an engaged citizen of the planet I read several nonfiction books about the climate each year and also regularly listen to several planet podcasts. Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson created a Venn Diagram to help people determine where to best contribute to climate action. Following this inspiration, I now run an Instragram social media account (ic_bike _commuter) to educate, promote, and encourage others in our community to consider biking as a form of transportation. Transportation is the number one source of carbon emissions in the United States and one of the largest globally. As we continue to mitigate the effects of climate change, there is an urgent need to move away from the transportation systems powered by fossil fuels. One of the most favored solutions to achieve this is to transition to electric vehicles (EVs). However, government leaders around the world believe that a solution this is entirely reliant of EVs is not sufficient. Many experts agree that vehicle electrification alone won't produce the emissions cuts needed to hit key climate targets on the timeline required. I now consider myself a self-educated urban planner where I am learning about the impacts of urban planning on transportation choices of their residents. Recently I have submitted a grant proposal to promote biking use on the University campus. As an engaged citizen of Iowa City, I have served on the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Board from 2017 through 2021. 1 regularly attend University of Iowa climate events/lectures to learn more about current climate issues in our community and on the University campus. As a UIHC staff psychologist, I am aware of the challenges of shaping human behavior and understand we will need more citizens shaping their behaviors to help tackle climate change. I lead by example, and hope modeling active transportation as an option will inspire others to also consider biking as a form of transportation in Iowa City. I also am the proud owner of solar panels on my roof, and hope others in the community will follow suit if their budgets allow. Potential Conflicts of Interest Please contact the City Attorney at 356-5030 to discuss questions or concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest. The following describe some but not all potential conflicts. The Housing and Community Development Commission makes recommendations to the City Council regarding the distribution of federal CBDG/HOME funds. The general rule is that no persons who exercise or have exercised any functions or responsibilities with respect to federally funded activities, or who are in a position to participate in the decision-making process or gain inside information with regard to such activities, may obtain a financial interest or benefit from a federally—assisted activity, or have a financial interest in any contract, subcontract, or agreement with respect to a federally -assisted activity, or with respect to the proceeds of the federally -assisted activity, either for themselves or those with whom they have business or immediate family ties, during their tenure or for one year thereafter. Most members of City Boards and Commissions are employed, and/or have a financial interest in one or more non-profit entities. Section 362.5 of the Code of Iowa generally prohibits, with certain important exceptions, a member of a City Board or Commission from having an interest in a City contract. In order to navigate potential conflicts of interest for certain matters, please list any and all business or non-profit entities in which you have an employment or financial interest. I care a lot about the work we have been doing, but I don't feel that I can make the time commitment any longer. 1 struggled to make it work when I began, and with me needing to put in a lot of overtime at myjob, having personal commitments I've been struggling to keep as a result, I think leaving is the best option for me right now. You have been wonderful to work with, and I hope to work with the city again in the future.
