PROCLAMATION
Yr lira ray, Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November /u
that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-
transgender violence; and
Whereas, in 1999 Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in order to
memorialize the murder of Rita Hester, a transgender woman; and
Whereas, The Human Rights Campaign tracks annual statistics of violence against
people in the transgender community. The latest statistics currently available for 2023
report over 25 transgender or gender non -conforming people fatally shot or killed by
other violent means in the US. A disproportionately high number of victims are Black
and Latinx transgender women; and
Whereas, Transgender Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to look forward to the
future and recommit to ending discrimination and transphobia by amplifying the visibility
and voices of the transgender community; and
Whereas, Participate in Transgender Day of Remembrance by attending and/or
organizing a vigil on November 20 to honor all those transgender people whose lives
were lost to anti-transgender violence, and learn about the violence affecting the
transgender community.
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
November 20th, 2023 to be
Transgender Day of Remembrance
in Iowa City. The Transgender Pride flag will be hung at City Hall, from Wednesday,
November 16 through Wednesday, November 22.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Iowans ages 1-44
and the 4th leading cause of death for all ages; and
Whereas, injuries and violence resulted in an annual average of 2,200 deaths, 14,000
hospitalizations, and 387,000 emergency department visits in Iowa. The number of
injuries in Iowa is estimated to be higher due to the unknown number of individuals who
received other medical care or no care at all; and
Whereas, injuries can result in a high cost to Iowans with average charges up to
$54,700 per hospitalization and more than $1,900 per emergency department visit
annually; and
Whereas, in Iowa, the three leading causes of unintentional injury deaths in 2022 were
falls, motor -vehicle crashes, and unintentional poisoning; and
Whereas, University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital and University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics, the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center, Iowa
Department of Health and Human Services and other partners across the state are
committed to increasing public awareness and education around the prevention of injuries
as we observe National Injury Prevention Day in Iowa and throughout the year.
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
November 18th, 2023 to be
