Duties
The Commission receives its authority from the Iowa City Human Rights Ordinance. Under the Ordinance it is illegal to discriminate in the area of employment, credit, housing, public accommodation and education. The Commission also serves as a link to the City Council making recommendations to the Council for such further legislation concerning discrimination as it may deem necessary and desirable.

Public Meeting
The Commission holds monthly meetings in the Lobby Conference Room on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Special meetings are held as needed. The meetings are open to the public and the public is encouraged to participate in the forum. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities.
