HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-05-07 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, our Iowa spring is graced by the beauty, color, and song of millions of migrating songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowls and raptors, and WHEREAS, many neotropical migratory species are now a cause of conservation concern because of habitat destruction both here and on their wintering grounds, and WHEREAS, a hemispheric consortium of governments, institutions, conservation groups, and individuals called Partners-in-Flight has been established to study and deal with threats to migratory species, and WHEREAS, Partners-in-Flight has declared the second Saturday in May as International Migratory Bird Day to educate the public about this work and celebrate the spring migration, and WHEREAS, local groups like the Raptor Center, Iowa City Bird Club, and Johnson County Songbird Project will hold field trips and educational programs in conjunction with this day. NOW, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 11, 2002, to be International Migratory Bird Day in Iowa City and encourage Iowa Citians to participat,~ these programs, to learn about, and to enjoy thc spring bird migration... ~ ~~ Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 7th day of May, 2002. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Congress and President of the United States have designated May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week; and Whereas, the members of the Iowa City Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding rights and freedoms; and Whereas, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of Iowa City Police, and that members of our Police Department recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression; and Whereas, the men and women of the Iowa City Police Department unceasingly provide a vital public service. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, call upon citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe the week of May 12-18, 2002 as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and observances. I further call upon all citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe May 15, 2002, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.
