It fosters independence, confidence and faith in the future, and Whereas, a home provides a haven as well as a tangible asset that citizens can pass down to their children and grandchildren, and Whereas, homeownership benefits and fosters a "sense of community" as homeowners have a strong interest in maintaining the value of their investments, contributing to the safety of their neighborhoods, and the quality of their schools, and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has demonstrated an awareness and commitment that all citizens, public and private organizations contribute to their communities to build better neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Proof is found in the partnership established by the Iowa City Area Association of Realtors and the Iowa City Housing Authority to provide a Home Buyer Education Course for low-income and first-time homebuyers, and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has made the financial commitment to fostering homeownership through the following programs: Affordable Dream Homeownership; Community Development Block Grant funds; Grant funds provided to the Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County; HOME funds; Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership; and, Public Housing Tenant-to-Owner. Now, Therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim June 2006 as Homeownership Month and call upon the people of Iowa City to join me in recognizing the importance of realizing the dream of homeownership.
