RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING RE-EVALUA TlON OF IOWA CITY'S
POLICY REGARDING SEPTIC SYSTEMS WITHIN TIlE CORPORA TE
LIMITS AND WITHIN TIlE TWO-MILE FRINGE
WItEREAS, clean water Is assentlalto the public health and welfare: and
WItEREAS, studies have shown that Inadequately Installed and maintained septic
systams may contribute to the pollution of ground and surface water; and
WItEREAS. the Iowa City Planning and Zoning CommIssion reviews development
proposals within Iowa City and within the two"mlle extraterritorial Jurisdiction ef
Iowa CIty: and
WItEREAS. the use of septic systems within the corporate limits. end outside the
corporate limits. has been Included In recent development proposals: end
WItEREAS. currentlewa City law permIts the use of septic systems when municipal
sewer Is not within 300 feet of the property: and
WItEREAS. the Commission Is concerned about a proliferation of septic systems
within the City and the County and the potential effect such systems may have on
the water.
NOW. THEREFORE. DE IT RESOLVED DY TItE IOWA CITY PLANNING AND
ZONING COMMISSION THAT:
A recommendation be forwarded to the City Council that the City's polley
regarding septic srstems within the corporate limits and within tho City's two-
mile extraterrltorla Jurisdiction be ro-ovaluated In light of heightened concern for
tho quality of Iowa's ground and surface water.
