Washington Iowa City, IA 52245 August 28. 1990 Dear Mr. Atkins: I am a resident In Ule neighborhood that borders Mercy Hospital. I have great concerns regarding Mercy Hospital being allowed to add a helicopter service; these concerns Include problems of safety associated with the noise, vibration and nlr turbulence caused by u helicopter In the Immedlalely surrounding residential neighborhood and the safety concerns associated with the /lIght plan as I understand It. Mercy's neighborhood 10 the west Includes several church spires and lall Untverslty buildings with added projections on top. St. Mary's steeple Is often lost In the clouds, for Instance. However, my main emphasis In writing this letter Is to direct your attenUon 10 addressing the practical needs of Mercy for the helicopter service while serving both Its paUents and the whole community of Iowa City In a cost effective manner, The enclosed editorial from the Des Moines Register from last week expresses speclOe concerns that can be directly relaled 10 Mercy Hospital's wish to add a hellcopler service, 1l seems that adding a very expensive service for four 10 eight people a month while passing the cost of such a service to the lotal pnUent care package only adds to Mercy's stalus - not to the greater good of lown City henlth cnre. The University of lown nnd the lown City airport bolh have heliports which give the pilots adequnte spnce for landing In the vagaries of changing air currents close to the landing pad, Duplication of a helicopter servtce Is dangerous for more reasons than considerations for safety. Sharing a helicopter service Is dellnltely nn nrea In which coopernUon In the henlth care community of Iowa City should lake precedence over competition. Sincerely yours, rJ~ A{ Joan Hart '.
