HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-07-18 Proclamation (0.'0# ~' City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed by the United States Congress on July 26, 1990, to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities, and Whereas, the organization known as Evert Conner Center for Independent Living wishes to make known to the general public the importance of this Act, and Whereas, people with disabilities - mental, physical or emotional- are individuals in and of themselves, and need the respect and support of others if they are to become independent and self-supporting, and Whereas, the City Council wishes to express support for the efforts of the members of the Evert Conner Center for Independent Living. Now, therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim July 29, 2006 to be Persons with Disabilities Day and urge all citizens to become aware of and support the intent of The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Independent Living phHosophy which dictates that pe~sabll'ies will take control and manage their lives.
