Dear Counc i 1 :
I have lived on Yewell Street for over 30 years and use
Kirkwood Boulevard on an average of four times daily. In my
observation of Kirkwood and its traffic load, its present
width, two wide lanes with turning lanes at major
intersections, is ideal for safe, quick, and pleasant
driving. If it is repaved for any reason, it should be at
exactly its present width. Widening the street to four
narrow lanes would be dangerous for automobiles, bicycles,
and pedestrians and would irreparably damage the entire
neighborhood.
Through traffic and heavy trucks already have an
alternative, US 6, closely paralleling Kirkwood. I see no
need to waste scarce road tax dollars on this unnecessary
proposal.
Sincerely,
~ln

To ~Ie City Council:
This is regarding the proposed widening of Kirkwood Ave. I do not believe that it is in
the best interests of Iowa City to degrade the quality of any neighborhood in tllatway.
Iowa city is so far a decent place to live largely because it is not choked with traffic as is
Los Angeles and because the size is manageable. Neighborhood quality should have a
higher priority than speeding up traffic flow. The desire to speed up traffic flow only arises
because bad decisions were made in encouraging excessive growth of the community.
I oppose any widening of Kirkwood Avenue,
Thank you.
Sincerely,
teric~~

I am sending this letter to express my concern and-anger. over the proposals to
widen KlrkY"ood Ave and Lower Muscatlne. The integrity of our neighborhood is
in jeopardy and we want you to know how strongly we feel about this issue.
Kirkwood Avenue/Lower Muscatine is an historic neighborhood as well as a
mixed.income neighborhood. Preserving this safe, friendly, and affordable
neighborhood is very important not only to citizens who reside in this area, but
to citizens in the greater Iowa City area. Because very few neighborhoods of
this character are still, intact in Iowa City, it is extremely important that we work
together to ach!eve the goal of keeping Kirkwood Avenue/Lower Muscaline and
its surrounding streets a suitable and safe piace for families, older cilizens and
people of all ages, backgrounds, and Incomes to live.
Widening the road will have grave consequences for our neighborhood

about our neighborhood and find It a special and affordable place to live.
As our elected representalive, we ask that you spend our tax dollars wisely and
that Kirkwood Ave and Lower Muscatlne be rebuilt without widening or

July 2, 1992
Dear Members of the Council:
I am writing to voice my support for increased regulations
for lawn care companies. I believe that it is important to get
prior approval and have a pre-application notice posted in order
to protect against unwanted chemical applications.
I use Quality Care for core aeration and the application of
organic (turkey) fertilizer and appreciate the non-chemical work
that they do. Even if I used their more traditional services, I
would not be opposed to the proposed regulations, I think that
it's common courtesy to warn your neighbors of chemical
application,
Sincerely,

We, as Letter Carriers, support the proposed pre and post warning flags
for use by the chemical companies and private home owners using lawn
chemicals. We are concerned with this issue because we walk through lawns
on the routes and would like to avoid chemically treated lawns to prevent
long term exposure to lawn chemicals. We support the idea of posting the
flags at each corner of the lawn as many times we have walked through a
lawn before finding the warning flag. Adequate foot wear to protect
against the lawn chenicals is a problem and the proposition will help
tremendously in avoiding chemically treated lawns. We are also in favor
of a picture type warning as many times s!'\allchildren who cannot read
, the printed word may be exposed to the chemicals.

chemicals. As a letter carrier I am concerned with this issue because
I walk through lawns on my route and would like to avoid chemically
treated lawns to prevent long term exposure to the lawn chemicals.
I also support thb idea of posting the flags at each corner of the
lawn as many times I haved walked through the lawn before finding the
warning flag. I do not have adequate foot wear to protect me so my
only defense is to aviod the chemically treated lawns and the proposition
will help me tremendously. '
