7/89 to Present: Director, Office of Special Support Services
Responsible for administering the University's comprehensive academic
support programs for targeted populations. The Office serves as a retention
center and provides academic, social, cult~al, and financial support to
approximately 1,200 undergraduate and 600 graduate and professional
students. The Office is divided into seven functional areas: 1) an
Undergraduate Academic Support Program which includes orientation, academic
counseling, mentoring program, postbaccalaureate planning, peer assistance
program, Opportunity at Iowa scholars, and student performance evaluations;
2) the Graduate and Professional Student Support component which provides
support to graduate and professional students through strong liaison
relationships with the Graduate College and professional schools, academic
performance monitoring, a supplemental stipend and grant program and support
activities designed with student members of focus groups; 3) the Preparatory
Summer and Transitional Year Program which is designed for recruited
students who have a special talent, i,e., athlete, performing art student,
etc. but don't meet the stated admissions requirement; 4) Partnership
Programs which are designsd to identify and work with elementary and middle
school low-income students or students of color to broaden their perspective
on postsecondary education; 5) the Upward Bound Project which is a
federally-funded program serving 110 low-income and/or students of color,
high school aged in six cities in southeast Iowa ($300,000 per year TRIO
Grant, 3 year cycle); 6) a Student Support Services Project--New Dimensions
in Learning--is a federally funded program which provides free tutorial
services to students who meet the eligibility requirements. Project serves
approximately 400 students per semester and employs 80-100 tutors each

semester ($212,000 per year TRIO Grant, 3 year cycle); 7) the Educational
Opportunity Program is a grant support program for students who are from
groups who historically have been underrepresented in higher education and
demonstrate financial need. Generally, students receive a grant which
covers tuition. Approximately $2,500,000 is allocated for this grant
program.
The Director provides the leadership for the development of institutional
linkages and university-wide programs specifically supporting the
University'S strategic plan goal of respecting and supporting diversity.,
Additional responsibilities include: developing and administering the
Office's strategic plan, budgetary preparation and administration for all
office programs which totals in excess of $1,500,000, program evaluation and
student outcomes assessment, staff selection and supervision, formulating
and implementing operating policies and procedures for all seven program
areas and submitting the annual report for all areas. The Director is also
responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with
the deans of the University'S ten colleges and the student services
offices. In addition, strong ties are kept with the Office of Student
Financial Aid, the Office of Admissions and Records, the College of Liberal
Arts, and the Undergraduate Academic Advisement Center.

Medical Student Affairs and Admissions on the Springfield and Carbondale
campuses. Areas of responsibility included: overseeing the application and
admissions process for the School of Medicine, including chairing the
Admissions Committee and acting as a' liaison with the Association of
American Medical Colleges (AAMC); articulation with senior colleges,
community colleges, high schools, and the general public concerning
admissions information; registration of all medical students; maintained all
medical student records; liaison with the Carbondale Office of Admissions
and Records; coordinated student financial aid information, applications,
and awards; chaired the Medical School Financial Aid Awards Committee and
was the liaison with the Office of Student Work and Financial Affairs in
Carbondale; assisted medical students in the preparation of such cases as
appeals of dismissal, repeating sequences, etc. in accordance with Student

9/80 - 6/83: Director, The High Potential Students Program (lIPS)
The High Potential Students Program Office provided academic and counseling
support services primarily to economically disadvantaged students. The
Office provided coursework in the areas of English, mathematics, and
reading. Services were available to the overall student population on a
limited basis and were designed to maximize student success.
Responsibilities included: New Student Orientation Program, New Staff
Development Program, Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, Reading and
Study Skills Center, Diagnostic and Placement Testing, administration of
three programs for students who were not regulary admissable--Collegiate
