June 19aB 015.30 .. :" I , I .., EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION: ! feel fortunate to have spent much of my childhood growing up in Iowa City. Due to the existence of the University of Iowa, I was exposed to people with life styles different than mine at a young age. Pursuing a degree from the University of Iowa broadened my academic as well as cultural awareness. As a student, I naturally met students and faculty members representing a variety of ways of thinking. This enabled me to further grow in my understanding and acceptance of others. My educational interests also helped me. While working on my Master's Degree in Spanish, I had a teaching assistantship. I enjoyed the challenge of trying to influence the attitude of many students towards learning a second language and learning about another culture. During the last few years as Training Officer, I developed technical skills training for new employees. I also enjoyed facilitating supervisory skills training to different levels of management. It was interesting and rewarding to see managers begin to evaluate themselves, their different styles of management and how they apply them to different employees. , WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? Prior to this year, my knowledge of the commission was limited to cases as they appeared in the local newspaper. In the spring of this year, I was given the opportunity to meet and work with Ray Haines and Alice Harris. " my previous position as Training Officer I along with the Personnel ~fficer, we developed a panel presentation and training session on sexual harassment. With their help, the program was successfully given to all employees. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? My interest for serving on the commission was initially due to talking to Ray and Alice about the responsibilities of the commission. As a member, I would sincerely support my belief in the rights of the individual. I feel I would be able to maintain an objective approach when looking at both sides of a case. Through developing technical training programs, it was rewarding to be able to negotiate compromises between several departments needing to follow the same procedures and policies. I enjoy mediating solutions to problems in the fairest way possible. My experiences and interests show my desire to help people open their minds to diversity. I have experienced many benefits from living in Iowa City. I feel a position on the Human Rights Commission would afford me a way to contribute to the community in which I live. ,;( 5JO " , , ~, - CITY OF IOWA CITY - ADVISORY BOARD/COHHISSION APPLICATION FORM r.'G,:r r1 r:: Indlvldudls serving on Boards/Conmissions play an irrpbrtant:role in advising the Council on matters of Interest to our conmunity and its future.
