K. Jesse Singerman
Application for Iowa City Library Board of Trustees
Experience and activities which qualify me for this position:
I have served on numerous Boards of Directors, including a six year term on the National
Cooperative Bank Board of Directors located in Washington DC, the National Cooperative Bank
Development Corporation Board of Directors where I held the position of Chairman from 1988 to
i993, several cooperative foundations and the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action
Center.
In my capacity as President of Blooming Prairie Warehouse, Inc. I report to a Board of
Directors elected by our membership. I have a good appreciation of the role of a Board of
Directors in policy making and the responsibilities of a Board for oversight of the organization
from both a board and a management perspective. I believe these experiences have made me an
effective director in a variety of settings.
In addition, I have almost 20 years of experience in business with responsibility for
strategic planning, financial performance and service development. I have directed 7 major
warehouse expansions for Blooming Prairie and guided the company through many changes and
high growth. I have attached a resume for your information.
Also, I am just completing my first year of a two year MBA program at the University of
Chicago and I would bring that information and perspective to bear on the issues facing the
library.
In short, I believe I am well qualified for this position.
I
Present knowledge of this advisory board?
I have spoken with the current Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Kent Swaim, and I
believe I have an accurate picture of the roles and responsibilities of the Board. I understand the
commitment and preparation that are necessary in the position.
What contributions do I feel I can make to this advisory board? ,
I consider the Iowa City Library one of our community's most important cultural and
intellectual resources. It is a wonderful institution and one of the reasons I like living in Iowa
City. I bring an appreciation of the role of a public library in the free life of a democratic
community, and a desire to see it grow and flourish. I don't think it is possible to overestimate
how important access to information, literature and other library services are to any community;
particularly to one as lively and as unusual as our own.
I would bring a strong background in financial matters, planning and in the development
and implementation of programs. lD
. It would be an honor to serve on the Iowa City Library Board of Trustees.2han~ou for
Your consideration. ~:: ,':") S; c'l
