HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-17 Proclamation rf'7#... . ) l:' (} ~~ ~) City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, somewhere in the United States, a home-fire death occurs about every three hours, of which the highest risk groups are children aged five and under, and senior citizens; and Whereas, 80 percent of fatal home-fire victims are aged 20 and under, and are killed in homes without working smoke alarms, between the hours of 10:00 PM' and 06:00 AM, when most people sleep; and Whereas, households with inoperative smoke alarms now outnumber those homes with no smoke alarms, and smoke alarms most often fail because of dead or missing batteries; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, October 29, 2006, is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time.
