Susan Horowitz, Councilmember 1129 Kirkwood Avenue Iowa city, IA 52240 Dear Susan, First, I would like to thank you for the opportunity of serving Iowa city on the Human Rights commission for the past 3 years. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience. I have submitted an application for the renewal of my term on the commission, and ask for your support in consideration of the 1994 appointments to the commission. I , During my first term, I have gained a'working knowledge of Iowa City's Human Rights ordinanc~ (Chapter 18) as well as Chapter GOlA of the code of Iowa through specific training and the general procedural affairs of the commission. I feel that the preparation and experience that I can bring to the commission through a second term would be very valuable in ultimately serving the Iowa city community. I have also been involved in outreach programs, such as public forums on AIDS education, sexual orientation and human rights pOlicies, and racial discrimination; and I will continue to work on such programs, as I believe that such proactive measures are an essential function of the Human Rights commission. Thank you for your, consideration. If you would like further information from me, don't hesitate to contact me. t Ii, I' ,i ,i. ,', " " ,1 ,j , ~': t ~ ,'j :/" ] :1 .'1 :) " ; ~ t,! This letter will supplement my application. I believe my educational and employment experience qualify me to serve on the Human Rights Commission. I have an undergraduate degree in government from Georgetown University and a law degree from Emory University in Atlanta. Following graduation from law school in 1988, I practiced law with a large Washington, D.C. communications law finn before moving to a finn with a public interest practice in environmental and employment discrimination law. I hope that my familiarity with public policy and legal issues would be helpful in service on the advisory board. I am strongly interested in serving on the Human Rights Commission for many of the same reasons that I left the legal profession after five years to return to graduate school. I am pursuing graduate work in American Studies on an Iowa fellowship In order to study group acculturation - namely, the different racial, ethnic, religious, and other such groups within society as a whole and the ways in which they achieve common goals, primarily recognition of their equality and right.lo non-dlscrimination, through individual and group action. Of course, I am also interested In seeing the goal of non-discrimination realized. I am a new but enthusiastic member of the Iowa City community and intend to stay in Iowa City until I have earned my doctorate. Therefore, I hope that the fact that I am a graduate student does not suggest that I do not have a commitment to serve enthusiastically and for the entire three-year tenn. Given the size and diversity of the University community and its importance to Iowa City, I think it would be beneficial to have a student serve on the Human Rights Commission. Please call me if you need further infonn.,tion. Thanks. Sincerely, t/;r~fI~ '" l.:> w -. -. '. : '::i :~~ " " .; . . - .. I '...., , , ", ,'\) ''','1. : .." -. _'Ol' " -.
