Duties of tha Historic Preservation Commission
Include: conducting studies for the Idenllflcatlon
end designation of Historic Districts; reViewing
and acting upon all applications for Cerllflcate of
Appropriateness; cooperating with property own-
ers end city agonclas regarding remedy of dan-
gerous conditions; fUrlherlng the efforls of historic
preservation In the City by making recommenda-
tions on preservation Issues, when appropriate,
by encouraging the protection and enhencement
of structures with historical, architectural orcullur-
el velue, and by encouraging persons and organi-
zetlons to become Involved In preservation activi-
ties,
This Commission meets the second Tuesday of
eech month at 7:30 p.m, Iowa City eppolnted

AIRPORT COMMISSION
One vacancy. Six year term
March 1, 1994 - March 1, 2000
Duties: To exercise all the powers granted to
cllles and towns under Chapter 330 of the Code
of Iowa, except the power to sell said airport, To
annually certify the amount of taxes wllhln the
limitations of the Statutes of the State of Iowa to
be levied for airport purposes. All funds derived
from taxation or otherwise for airport purposes
shall be under the full and absolute control 01 the
Airport Commission, deposited wllh the Clly Trea.
surer, and disbursed only on the written warrants
or order of the Airport Commission,
Iowa City appointed members of boards and
commissions must be eligible electors of the Clly
of Iowa Clly, The Airport Commission meets the
third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p,m,

One vacancy. Five-year term
February 26, 1994 . February 26, 1999
The powers and duties of the Board of AdJust-
ment are:
1. To hear and decide appeals where h Is
alleged there is an error In any administrative
action In the enforcement of the ordinance.
2. To hear and decide on special exceptions
that are specifically provided for in the
ordinance.
3. To authorize on appeal in specnlc cases
variances from the terms of the ordinance.
Variances granted by the Board of
Adjustment may only be granted in the case
of 'unnecessary hardship.' The hardship
must be substantial, serious, real, and of
compelling force, as distinguished from
reasons of convenience, maximization of
prolh or caprice.
The Board meets at the call of the
Chairperson. Iowa Chy appointed members of
boards and commissions must be eligible electors
of the Chy of Iowa City.
This appointment will be made at the January
4, 1994, meeting of the Chy Council at 7:30 p.m.

Through personal experience with the Board of Adjustment, I understand the
need to make reasonable accomodations to human needs while maintaining the
integrity of neighborhoods and zoning codus. A 'few years ago my husband
and I together with our nextdoor neighbors, Jason and Donna Chen, desired
to rebuild the deteriorating, two-stall garage straddling our shared,
sidelot line. I personally prepared all the documents needed to approach
the Board for a special exception. Since that successful appeal, those
documents have been used by our city planning staff as an example of well-
prepared forms.
