8beu115, many thousands of veterans of America's armed forces have
served this nation in times of both peace and war, and in doing so
have thereby assured the independence of all her people, and
8bere115, more than a million veterans enter the Deparbnent of
Veterans Affairs Medical Centers nationwide for medical attention
annually, and
8bere115, these hospitalized veterans, who yet bear the physical and
emotional scars of war, have most surely earned our gratitude for
the many personal sacrilices they have made in our behalf, and
8bere115, the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, for the
twenty.first consecutive year, has organized a national day of
tribute honorin~ all hospitalized veterans with the purpose of
ur~ing all Americans to remember these men and women,
especially on this clay.

Bbtrta5, the month of February has been declared Black History
Month and is recognized as such throughout the country, and
Bbe~~a5, the intent of this annual observance is to acknowledge the
numerous contributions which Black Americans have made to the
growth of American society, and
Bberea5, it is to our benefit to uncover the rich and varied past of
Black Americans, for in recognizing their strengths and talents we
create pride and unity among people of all races.

Wlberell5, Sertoma International, a civic organization, the motto of
which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week
Program dedicated to the re-emphasis of the values and
responsibilities of people in a free society, and
Wlberell5, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies
of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence
throughout its entire membership of Clubs, and
Wlberell5, the old Capitol Sertoma Club of Iowa City is planning to
carry out special patriotic activities in the fonn of the National
Heritage Essay Contest during the 1994 Freedom Week, and
Wlberell5, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to
this patriotic' movement.

mlbmas, the eighth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day
will celebrate women athletes who have broken barriers, the
pioneers who have been the first woman or the first person to
accomplish a feat, and
mlbmas, the 1994 National Girls and Women in Sports Dar,
celebrated on the first Thursday in February each year, will
continue the 1993 theme of breaking down the barriers that
exclude girls and women from sports, and
mtbmas, the achievements of women athletes need to be made known
to girls, not that they sllOuld repeat those feats, but to expand their
view ot what they can become, and
mtbmas, Girls Scouts of the U.S.A. for the first time will be joining
Girls Incorporated, National Association for Girls and Women in
Sports, Women's Sports Foundation and YWCA of the U.S.A. to
coor&ate events for this special day, and
mtbmas, the Women's Intercollegiate Athletics of The University of
Iowa are taking nart in this national observation by scheduling
special events, and
i1Wbmas, we wish to join our local women athletes in observing this
special day and to congratulate them on their many
accomplis~ents.
