, few Scout units can match, and that is being active for fifty years"

.berell~, this tenure is a tri1ute to the volunteer leaders and the
support of parents of the scouts, and
Dbmll~, thousands of youths have benefitted horn the Scout programs
offered by Troop 218 during these fifty years, and
'Iltberell~, Scouting I?rograms and activities contri1ute immensely to the
development of youth into responsible adults in our society, and
'Iltberells, we want to pay tri1ute to the leaders, past and present, of
Troop 218 who have given so much of themselves to plan
programs and activities which influence youths at a very important
time in their lives,

is a convenient and reliable form of transportation for most
residents, and . .
mbert115, Iowa City is a city where walking and bi1ing are acceptable
and healthy forms of transportation, used by many in place of
automobiles, and
mbere115/ using alternate means of transportation improves personal
health ana fitness, reduces parking congestion\ and reduces our
dependence on fossil fuels as well as improving the air quality, and
mberel15, many programs have been planned to encourage or discuss the
use of alternate forms of transportation during,May 15.21, 1994,
including the Iowa Ci~ Council Cha.llenge, Bike to Work Day on
May 17, and National Transit Day on May 19, and
Whereas, the City Council of Iowa City wishes to support this effort to
use alternate transportation,

JUt it be known, that each year nearly 8,000 of America's children die
. from unintentional injuries and an additional 50,000 are
permanently disabled, and
let it be known that these tragic injuries, so called "accidents," are often
predictable and preventable, and
let it be known that the National SAFE KIDS Campaign promotes
childhood inj~ prevention by uniting diverse groups into state
and local co.Jitions, developing innovative educational tools and
strategies, initiating public policy changes, promoting new
technology, and raising public awareness, and
let it be known that the Johnson CountY. SAFE KIDS Coalition is an
active partner in this campaign and is deeply committed to the
children of Johnson County, Iowa, and

resource and that we therefore su.pport the efforts and activities of
the Johnson County SAFE KIDI::J Coalition to prevent childhood

, South Africa when all people of all races participated in their
national election, and
mbma~, this occasion marks the beginning of the end of centuries of
oppression and se,parateness for millions of South Africans and
brings to them the status of first class citizens in their own
country, and
mbma~, today, Mar 101 1994, marks the inauguration of Nelson
Mandela as the Orst black president of South Africa, and
mberea~, we want to join with the citizens of South Africa, especially
those who reside in Iowa City, in rejoicing on this special event,

beginning and also to ewress our fervent hope that peace and !tood
will may reign in South Africa under the leadership of President
