.er~, violence against women is a pervasive reality; and
.er~, many women live in fear of violence committed by men; and
.ber~, violence (especially sexual violence), is disproportionately
committed by men against women; and
.erea~, women have been working for many years to reduce the risk
of violence against women; ana
.er~, men need to start taking responsibility for what can he done
to end men's violence; and
.erea~, this proclamation is not meant to invalidate violence done
against men; and
Dbtt~, men and women must work together to foster the mutual
respect necessary to end violence in our society; and
.berea~, education, communication and ~lic awareness are extremely
important in reducing and then eliminating violence against
women.

I urge the men of Iowa City to stop whatever you are doing at 3:00 PM
and join men across the nation in 3 minutes of silence to honor and
show support for women victim/surVivors of male violence.

PROCLAMATION
Ubma~, women are one.half of the worla's population, perform two.thirds of the
world's work, receive one.tenth of the world's income and own less than one.
hundredth of the world's property; and
Uberea~, women market over three.fifths of the world's food and represent over
three.fifths of the world's literate population; and
.berea~, these inequities for women worldwide will be on the agenda of the
United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality,
Development and Peace which will take place September 4.15, 1995 ~
Bejing, China; and
Wlberea~, the UN Bejing conference will mobilize women and men at both the
potcymaking and grassroots levels to achieve objectives outlined in the 1985
Nairobi Forward.Looking Strategies and adopt a Platform of Action to
remove fundamental obstacles to the advancement of women; and
Uberea~, Iowa women share commonalities with women worldwide; and
Uberea~, Iowa men and women must work together to submit recommendations
from Iowans to the US Department of State for the Bejing US National
Report for the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women to
change these inequities; and
Uberea~, education, communication and networking are extremely important to
accomptsh these objectives.

in an effort to vanquish and to prevent further world wars; and
ilmtbmau, in October 1995, the United Nations will celebrate the golden
annivers'!fY of its establishment-fifty xear,s in which it has
p,romoted p,eace and justice in the world, through feeding and
clothing cblldren in developing nations through UNICEF; battling
such deadline diseases as AIDS and chicken pox through the '
World Health Organization; sending troops to keep peace in
troubled areas of the world, including Cypms, Lebanon, and
Bosnia; sending nuclear weapons inspectors to Iraq, North Korea"
and other nations; and keeping the peace in a variety of ways; and
ilmtbml1U, the United Nations helPs in the fight against global narcotics
trafficl scourges such as malnutrition and hiberculosis, and works ,
toward the goal of a cleaner environment; and
ilmtbml1u, the Fiftieth Anniversary of this world body gives all
Americans an opporlunity to salute these efforts and to rededicate
ourselves to the l'rinciples of respect for all peoples, world peace,
and efforts at understanding and reconciliation among all peoples;

co-ops, credit unions, electric power co-ops, and agricultwal
co-ops, and
mluereas', the 120 million persons who are members of 47,000
cooperatives generate over 100 billion dollars worth of economic
activity in the u.s. each year, and
mluereas', 700 million people around the world share the legacy of the
first co-op OM the Equitable Pioneers of Rochdale, England founded
150 years ago.
