HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-07-16 Proclamation City of lowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Community Development Block Grant program has operated nationally since 1975 to provide local governments with the resources required to meet the needs of persons of low- and moderate-income, and CDBG funds are used by thousands of neighborhood-based, non-profit organizations throughout the nation to address pressing neighborhood and human service needs; and Whereas, the Conununity Development Block Grant program has had a significant impact on our local economies through job creation and retention, physical redevelopment and improved local tax bases; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa and other local governments have clearly demonstrated the capacity to administer and customize the CDBG program to identify, prioritize and resolve pressing local problems, such as affordable housing, human service needs, job creation and retention and physical redevelopment. Now, Therefore I, Ernest W. Lehman, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim July 18, 2002, as Community Development Day in Iowa City, Iowa, and urge all citizens to join us in recognizing the important roles the CDBG and HOME programs play in our community. Weber was a lifelong resident of Iowa City, Iowa, from December 19, 1900 to March 16, 1997; and Whereas, Irving Weber for many years shared his memories and historical facts with his fellow Iowa Citians; and Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club, of ,vhich Mr. Weber was a member, has published eight books of Mr. Weber's which set forth an invaluable history of Iowa City which includes not only historical facts but memories of events which shaped our city; and Whereas, on December 12, 1989, in demonstration of the community's appreciation for the historical legacy which Mr. Weber furnished for us, the Iowa City City Council bestowed upon Irving B. Weber the title of Official Historian of Iowa City; and Whereas, it is only fitting that the Iowa City community honor Irving Weber's work and remember Iowa City's history with a community festival. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the 2nd week of August as Irving B. Weber Days and Saturday, August 10, 2002, to be Irving B. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed by the United States Congress on July 26, 1990, to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities, and Whereas, the organization known as Evert Conner Rights & Resources Center for Independent Living wishes to make known to the general public the importance of this Act, and Whereas, people with disabilities - mental, physical or emotional - are individuals in and of themselves, and need the respect and support of others if they are to become independent and self-supporting, and Whereas, the City Council wishes to express support for the efforts of the members of the Evert Conner Rights & Resources Center for Independent Living. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim July 27, 2002, to be Persons with Disabilities Day and urge all citizens to become aware of and support the intent of The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Independent Living philosophy which dictates that persons with disabilities will take control and manage their lives. ~ Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 16th day of July, 2002.
