PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the West High Wrestling Team experienced great success during the 2006-
2007 season, and
Whereas, on February 24 and March 5, 2007, the team was able to bring home a
State Wrestling Title, the fifth and sixth state titles for wrestling in the history of West
High; and
Whereas, Coach Mark Reiland, his staff, and th'e wrestling team members richly
deserve the support and recognition of this community for their hard work, dedication,
and sportsmanship, and
Whereas, the City Council wishes to formally commend the 4 Individual State
Champions, the State Qualifiers, the State Dual participants, along with their coaches for
their outstanding efforts and accomplishments during the past season.

WHEREAS, millions of volunteers working in their communities utilize their time and
talent daily to make a real difference in the lives of children and adults; and
WHEREAS, the entire community can effect positive change with any volunteer
action, big or small; and
WHEREAS, volunteers connect with local community service opportunities through
hundreds of community service organizations, like the Volunteer Administrator's Network;
and
WHEREAS, during this week, all over the nation, service projects 'will be performed
and volunteers will be recognized for their commitment to community service; and

technicians, are invaluable members of the nation's health care team;
and
Whereas, these well-educated and highly-trained health professionals who
perform and evaluate medical laboratory tests to detect, diagnose,
monitor treatment, and help prevent diseases, save countless lives
each day; and
Whereas, their dedication to quality testing, public health prevention and
preparedness, and exceptional patient care is demonstrated daily in
thousands of laboratories in this nation, and;

WHEREAS, in our society violence against women and children continues to escalate;
and
WHEREAS, sexual violence affects every person in the City of Iowa City, Iowa as a
victim/survivor or as a family member, significant other, neighbor, or coworker of
a victim/survivor; and
WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City, Iowa recognizes the importance of designating a
time devoted to increasing the general public's awareness of sexual assault; and
WHEREAS, many citizens of Iowa City are working to provide quality services and
assistance to sexual assault survivors; and staff/volunteer advocates staff a 24-
hour hotline, respond to emergency calls, and offer support, comf<lrt, and
advocacy; and
WHEREAS, The Rape Victim Advocacy Program's sexual assault program of
volunteers/staff promote sexual assault prevention by offering education programs
to schools, churches, and civic organizations as well as professional training to
medical, mental health, law enforcement, education and criminal justice personnel
regarding sexual assault issues; and
WHEREAS, The Rape Victim Advocacy Program, other professionals and supporters
have joined together to support each other in their work and to provide the City of
Iowa City and its citizens with a central source of information on sexual assault,
prevention and services for survivors; public awareness of sexual violence; and
support for agencies providing sexual assault services; and
WHEREAS, The Rape Victim Advocacy Program requests public support and
assistance as it continues to work toward a society where all women, children, and
men can live in peace, free from violence and exploitation;

Centers of Johnson County, 4-Cs, The Iowa Children's Museum, and the
United Way of Johnson County all acknowledge that today's children are
tomorrow's leaders; and
Whereas, these organizations are working to build a stronger community by
improving early learning opportunities, which are crucial to the growth and
development of young children; and
Whereas, over 90% of brain development occurs in the first 3 years of life, and
all young children and their families deserve access to high-quality early
education, care, and activities; and
Whereas, these organizations have joined together to sponsor the 2nd Annual
Starting Smart event on Saturday, April 28 at The Iowa Children's Museum;
