THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING COMMISSION:
AIRPORT COMMISSION
One Vacancy - Unexpired Term
Ending March 1, 2004
Duties: To exercise all the powers granted to cities and towns under Chapter 330 of the Code of
iowa, except the power to sell said airport. To annually certify the amount of taxes within the limitations of
the Statutes of the State of Iowa to be levied for Airport purposes, All funds derived from taxation or
otherwise for airport purposes shall be under the full and absolute control of the Airport Commission,
deposited with the City Treasurer, and disbursed only on the written warrants or order of the Airport
Commission.
Iowa City-appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the Cit~ of
Iowa City. The Airport Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:45 p.m.
Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2002. The City of Iowa City
encourages diversity in the appointment of citizens to boards and commissions. Persons interested in
being considered should contact the City Clerk at the Civic Center, 410 E. Washington Street. Application

The powers and duties of the Airport Zoning Board of Adjustment are:
1. To hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement,
decision, or determination made by an administrative official in the enfomement of the Airport
Zoning Chapter.
2. To hear and decide special exceptions to the terms of the Airport Zoning Chapter upon which
such board is required to pass under the Airport Zoning Chapter.
3. To authorize upon appeal in specific cases such variance from the terms of the Airport Zoning
Chapter as will not be contrary to the public interest, where owing to special conditions a literal
enforcement of the provisions of the Airport Zoning Chapter will result in unnecessary hardship,
and so that the spirit of the Airport Zoning Chapter shall be observed and substantial justice done.

Duties of the Historic Preservation Commission include: conducting studies for the identification and
designation of Historic Districts; reviewing and acting upon all applications for Certificate of
Appropriateness; cooperating with property owners and city agencies regarding remedy of dangerous
conditions; furthering the effods of historic preservation in the City by making recommendations on
preservation issues, when appropriate, by encouraging the historical, architectural or cultural value, and by
encouraging persons and organizations to become involved in preservation activities.
This Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m and, if necessary, the fourth
Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Iowa City appointed members of the boards and commissions must

Duties of the Housing and Community Development Commission include assessing and reviewing
policies and planning documents related to the provision of housing, jobs, and services for Iow- and
moderate-income residents; reviewing policies and programs of the Public Housing Authority and
Community Development Division and make recommendations regarding the same to the City Council;
reviewing and making recommendations to the City Council regarding the use of public funds to meet the
needs of Iow- and moderate-income residents; housing policies and programs, and seeking public
participation in assessing needs and identifying strategies to meet these needs; recommending to the City
Council from time-to-time amendments, supplements, changes, and modifications to the Iowa City
Housing Code.
Iowa City-appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of Iowa
City. When possible, Council will appoint persons with expertise in construction and/or finance, a person
receiving rental assistance, and a member of the Local Homeless Coordinating Board. The Housing and
Community Development Commission will have monthly meetings.

Chapter of the American Red Cross. With the Iowa City A.M. Rotary club, I serve
as the chairperson and coordinator for the Rotary First Offender Program. This
unique program links first time offenders with mentors from the area Rotary clubs.
The mentors meet monthly with their assigned individual to ensure that all the
term of their probation agreement are being met. this program has improved
the participant success rate by 500% compared to individuals with similar offenses
not involved in the Rotary program.

You should also know that Section 362.5 of the Code of Iowa generally prohibits, with certain important

I regret to inform you that as of September 1, 2002, I am re(zgning from my position on the Housing
and Community Development Commission. I have enjoyed my experience as well as working ~vith
all of you. My family and school commitment make it difficult for me to devote the necessary time
