HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-05-01 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 14-18 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City ofIowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of Mayas National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City ofIowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2007 to be Bicycle Month in Iowa City, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, and with friends and family to promote the benefits achieved from bicycling. ~LJ~ Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 15t day of May, 2007. Weber was a lifelong resident of Iowa City, Iowa, from December 19, 1900 to March 16, 1997; and Whereas, Irving Weber for many years shared his memories and love for Iowa City and its history with his fellow Iowa Citians; and Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club, of which Mr. Weber was a member, has published eight books of Mr. Weber's which set forth an invaluable history oflowa City; and Whereas, on December 12, 1989, in demonstration of the community's appreciation for the historical legacy which Mr. Weber furnished for us, the Iowa City City Council bestowed upon Irving B. Weber the title of Official Historian oflowa City; and Whereas, it is only fitting that the Iowa City community continue to honor Irving Weber's legacy and highlight Iowa City's history with an annual community event; Now, therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim Irving B.
