General Application December 2006 Page 3 of 7 Page 1 of 1 ~;(3d Marian Karr From: Hoerschelman, Hans E [hans-hoerschelman@uiowa.edu] Sent: Friday, April 27, 2007 12:10 PM To: 'City Council Subject: Introduction RE: ICTC Council Members - My name is Hans Hoerschelman and I currently reside at 337 West Benton Street in Iowa City. I am contacting the council in regards to my application for appointment to the Iowa City Telecommunications Commission. Besides making myself available for any questions you may have, I wanted to formally introduce myself and give a quick background. I moved to Iowa City in 1999 to attend the University of Iowa. During my schooling I was employed at University of Iowa Human Resources as a student programmer. In 2004 I graduated from UI with a BS in Computer Science and a minor in Theater, after which I accepted a full time position with UI Human Resources. I continue that employment to the present. In March of 2006 I became active at Public Access Television in Iowa City, volunteering as a Technical Director on multiple shows, but most frequently on the "Tonight With Bradman" show. I was present the night of the April 13,2006 tornado and helped coordinate the PATV/TWB coverage of the aftermath and information dissemination, such as the 'text crawl' at the bottom of the screen. In December 2006 at the Annual Meeting I was nominated to the Board of Directors by the PA TV producers, and at the subsequent BOD meeting I was nominated and elected Vice Chair. In March 20071 coordinated the annual PATV 'Chili Cook-Off' Fundraiser, for which local businesses donated supplies or competed in the Cook-Off, the winner of which was "The Leaf Kitchen". On April 2nd, I journeyed to the capitol in Des Moines on behalf of PATV with a delegation of local PEG channel representatives to state our opposition to Senate File 554 at a Subcommittee meeting of the House Commerce Committee. I recorded the meeting and made it available for viewing on Google video, which vou may access by cU~king her!l. I have also had multiple contacts with our local legislators with regards to rejecting/amending SF 554. As an aside, I would like to commend our local House members, as well as Mike Brau and Drew Shaffer, for their responses to my questions and concerns, as well as their amendments offered to try and keep in place the protections and benefits granted to Iowa City and its residents by the existing franchising agreement. Currently I am investigating ways to Increase community awareness of the affects of SF 554, as well as gain a broader understanding of the current telecommunications environment, such as: technical requirements for the coming IPTV upgrade: currently available and possible wireless connectivity offerings for the area, and national legislation movements. I would be glad to hear any thoughts the council has on such matters. As stated in my application, I have a strong desire to protect and further the mission of community media, ensure consumer protections are In place for our community, as well as increase public awareness of events in the communications landscape. To safeguard against a conflict of interest, upon selection to the ICTC, I will be resigning my position on the Board of Directors at Public Access Television. Should I not be selected, I will continue to serve out my term at PA TV. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Email is usually the best way to contact me, and you will find my address below. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Hans Hoerschelman Vice Chair, Board of Directors Public Access Television, Iowa City hans, hoersc;hel man@uiowa.edu 319-466-1640 4/27/2007
