HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-05-14 Proclamation &# ~ I t%:6 CITY OF IOWA CITY PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Garlic Mustard is a non-native plant species that has no local natural controls and because it is not a food source for insects or wildlife, it has spread at an alarmingly fast rate for the past two decades,and WHEREAS, Garlic Mustard is now degrading local woodland by crowding out native plants such as wildflowers, ferns and tree seedlings which in turn also means a reduction in food sources for woodland animals, and WHEREAS, to effectively control the spread of Garlic Mustard, the plants must be pulled or cut between March and June before they go to seed and repopulate, and WHEREAS, City and county organizers have organized the 2007 Great Garlic Mustard Challenge to occur on Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 to noon with a free lunch at City Park for all volunteers following the pull in an effort to set a world record for the largest-ever Garlic Mustard pull and help control the noxious weed and NOW, Therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim and designate the week of May 14, 2007 to be GREAT GARLIC MUSTARD CHALLENGE WEEK in Iowa City and urge the citizens of this City to volunteer in this effort to help control Garlic Mustard by registering at ICGov.org/garlicmustard and participating in the event.
