concept narrative
The Education Center is constructed using reclaimed telephone poles as an exterior roof supporting
structure with overhangs designed to shade the classroom in summer and allow solar heat gain in
winter. Sloping the roof toward the south west allows indirect northern light to enter the space.
The outdoor classroom has a cascading stair/ seating area for direct interaction with one of the sites

concept narrative
The Education Center is located on the south east tip of the site within one of East Side Recycling's
bioswale areas. The center includes interior and exterior classrooms, public restroom facilities for the
campus (other restrooms are available at the ReStore), a kitchenette, storage space and an
environmental education area. The center's west wall is composed of open shelving visible from both
inside and outside to create a 24 hour display space for environmental education. Folding display
"walls" along the south face contain more classroom oriented subject matter and can be closed when
classroom darkening is required.
The environmental education concept for the East Side Recycling also consists of display signage
located throughout the site highlighting sustainable site and building practices.
