HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-09-10 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, September 11, 2002, marks the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon, as well as the crash of Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and Whereas, we must never forget the devotion of fire, police, and emergency services personnel as they selflessly responded to calls for help; and Whereas, thc events of September 11, 2001, brought national attention to the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices faced by fire, police, and emergency services personnel on a daily basis. Over 560 firefighters, police officers, and emergency services personnel courageously made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty last year; and Whereas, we will always remember what happened that day and to whom it happened. We will never forget the survivors, the children, the grieving families and friends left behind. We will never forget the victims who came from more than 80 countries, and many races and religions. We will never forget the heroes who died attempting to save them. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do call upon the citizens of Iowa City and upon all patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to observe September 11,2001 by lowering American flags to half-staff on September 11, 2002, to reflect on the loss as well as the many acts of heroism, bravery, and compassion. In addition, let us pay tribute to the indomitable spirit exhibited by Americans and other citizens of the world. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, our founding fathers, in order to seeur~ the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States of America, and Whereas, it is of the greatest importance that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve and defend it against all enemies; and Whereas, the two hundred fifteenth anniversary of the signing of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of the Framers of the Constitution, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to us in this unique document; and Whereas, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, should be remembered, Now, therefore, I, Ernest W.
