City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, fifty years ago, little was known about the condition of mental retardation
or its causes, and there were virtually no programs and activities in
communities to assist in the development, support, and care of families and
persons with mental disabilities; and many people with mental and
developmental disabilities were removed from their communities and
families; and
Whereas, fifty years ago a group of concerned parents and community supporters set
out to change the public's perception of children with mental retardation and
to help the community, families and the persons themselves believe in the
potential of people with mental retardation and things have changed, thanks
in part to the work of the Arc of Johnson County; and
Whereas, the Arc of Johnson County consists of a community of volunteers,
advocates, families, and very special people who work together to improve
systems of supports and services, to connect families, to inspire
communities and to influence public policy, and serves over 300 children
and adults annually with mental retardation and developmental disabilities;
and
Whereas, the Arc of Johnson County offers financial assistance for family needs,
provides support groups and respite for families exhausted by 24-7 care .of
their children; bi-1ingual services to the Spanish speaking community, and
summer day camps for children and teens with disabilities, including
activities such as swimming, horseback riding, picnicking, sports, games,
field trips, arts and crafts and special events.
Now, therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby
proclaim June 2007 as
Arc of Johnson County Month
in Iowa City and recognize that on their 50th anniversary the Arc of Johnson County has
not just changed lives of very special people and families, but it has changed the hearts
and attitudes of an entire community.
