While stress is a difficult factor to measure it is apparent that animals subjected to prolonged contact with crowds fre- quently show such symptoms as colic, diahhrea, and acute nervous behavior. Zoo directors and other professional animal handlers are familiar with this phenomenon - the signs showing up unmis- takably at zoos on weel_end s when crowds are largest. There are many things that contribute to stress but foremost among them must be: a) proximity of the people to the animals; b) unnatural or unfamiliar surroundings; c) noise; and d) the inability of the animal to retreat or withdraw from the stress- ful situation. Conscientious zoo directors try to control all these factors to minimize the effect they have on animals. When putting animals on display in condtions lil-e those at Sycamore Mall it seems inevitable that stressful conditions will be maxi- mized. Just as infants are extremely sensitive to excess attention, noise, and unfamiliar surroundings, young animals are particular- ly susceptible to stress. Because they have not developed the most basic defensive moves that come later we frequently do not recognize it - young animals do not cry or wet their diapers. You must look closely and sympathetically to recognize what is happening. But beyond the problems of the animals themselves I do not think "petting zoos" or "giddy barnyards" accomplish what we want of them. Indeed I think some of the effects are positively harm- ful arm- ful to us - human beings. I do not underestimate the popularity of such eyhibits, for to criticize them is to invite cries of protest and the atiacl: that one is either for "depriving our children of a valuable learning experience" or else insane. We have a Ftron� emotional attraction in seeing young animals and children together - a s ull- ject pictured wlth great frequency in newspapers, mariazines, and on television. One could speculate at lenryth on the source of this attachment but I think it is more important to realize that we sometimes let our emotional responses masquerade as rational behavior. In the case of kiddy barnyards the standard arnument is that - because most urban chilr1ren have little nr no experience with :r -Arm an;nmis thev wi l } ),otwf nrr mYF n. m- i. U nr}• n nn fmrw -z- 0 animals in an off the farm situation. What it is that children are "learning" from touching and seeing these animals is not clear to me. What kind of a learn- ing situation is it when all that is expected is a quick pass by (other children are waiting.,) and a hand on the animal. Just; what has the child learned from this? I've always thought these exhibits were designed for the emotional satisfaction of parents rather than to teach children anything. Well, if nothing else, say the exhibits' defenders, the children will learn that an finals are "their friends" and living beings just "like us." This reflects what I believe is the dominant failure in our culture's attitudes and actions regarding animals and there is a fifty -cent word that says it - anthropomorphism. What that means is that we tend to make over animals in our own image - to relate to them by giving them human traits, feelings and charac- teristics. We blur the essential differences between ourselves and animals by trying, to make them liK a us rather than accepting them as they are. Look. around our culture at the evidence of this - talking ani- mals on television, plush animal toys, and finally, Snoopy, Lassie, Winnie -the -Pooh, Smokey Dear, et al, who all share human voices, virtues, vices, and emotions. Today our society is so beset by this anthropomorphic overkill it is surprising that all child ren don't expect animals to speak English and dance across the meadow. Well then, don't kiddy barnyards let children see "real" ani- mals and counteract this trend? Animals, like people, are only real in the content of their environment. None of us exist nor can we be understood in terms of a vacuum. Children cannot be expected to see the cow, pig or sheep on the farm that we see in the calf, piglet, or lamb that we've put on display in a non-farm situation. Granted the animals are very real and they don't speak: English but the exhibit doesn't spear, one nichel's worth about what a farm is about either. And we're still left- with the ani- mals as cute and cuddly "friends." It is on this latter point that I think we are seriously mis- leading children about the nature of animals. One of the first things you learn "rowing up on the farm is that all animals are not your friends and that you must use great caution in dealing with them. Children on the farm quicl-ly learn not to clamber about among "friends" in bull pens, farrowing houses, or on feel- ing floors. They also learn that wile. animals are not to be ap- proached at all - especially those that do not run or show fright if disturbed. Where are urhan chilr'ren learning these lessons and are we giving them positive reinSorcement by kiddy barns anc, petting zoos? Last year well o,.•er 1� million children in this country were bitten by dn"s alone - many of them seriously on hands and aho,it the face. Thousands of children must undergo painful rabies shots because of bites from both domestic and wild animals that thev have approached . I will let you make up your own mind about any causal connections but for me they are inescapable. These are some of the reasons why I think I dcfly barnyards are less than desirable as educational e;chil�its for children. Sur- prisingly, it is children and young people who understand these things most quickly. Mien it became obvious that Iowa City could no longer provide adequate care for its zoo animals in terms of either money or manpower the children understood implicitly but many adults persiSCeC in a last ditch emotional defense. Some- times we can learn thinrs from children too. From the promotional point of view kiddy barnyards are attrac- tive because parents like them and therefore they draw crowds. No one could deny or refute this. I only hope that we can find bet- ter ways of promotinq agriculture that do not have these problems. (A side point I would like to raise concerns what happens when we carry the "friendly" animal theme to its logical conclusion. You don't have to ao far to find parents who've had difficulty with children when they discover that today's meat was yesterday's friend. Stockmen would do well to consider what happened to hunters after a generation of Bambi 'viewers grew up. You might find this laughable but you won't find hunters who do.) I said I would propose alternatives and these are some I hope everyone could live with. They could apply to both one-time e_- hibit-s as at the Niall or more permanent IriJdy barnyards. 1. Eliminate the touching - this accomplishes both lessening stress on the animals and stops riving children the mis- taken notion that animals exist to be fondled. This could be achieved by fiou'ile-fencing - somethinq common at zoos. 2. Restrict the hours - the a;:hibi does not have to be open aroundt-he clocl.. Mhy not set .tp a schedule of bei.nr open two hours in the morn:no and two in the afternoon? This would eliminate stress and make it something more than a casual e;:h i')i t, People who wanted to see it would have to male a spec --'al e-N.ort. 3.
