HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-10-04 Correspondence7 0 0 Madam Mayor: Members of the Council, ellow Citizens; Ten years ago I was hired to organize the traffic Engineering Division for the city of Iowa City. When I came to Iowa City the entire operation was in a room 10 x 16 and as for tools the Division did not even own a screw driver. I am not going to throw a lot of oon ga we but I am proud to say that I have done just that. Iowa City has one of the finest Traffic Engineering Div. in the Midwest. A gentleman who has visited every Traffic Engineering Facility in the States of Iowa and Nebraska was in my office about three weeks ago and told Mr. Brachtel and my self that Iowa City was the number one. If we didn't have a little fun now and then life could become very dull so I have written a little piece of poetry entitled A RETIRED CITY EMPLOYEE Last night I had a terrible dream I dreamt that I had died They put me in an old black hearse To take that long last ride. I arrived there at the pearly gates And was knocking loud and clear When St. Peter came and asked of me What are you doing here? I said I've come to claim my place In that Mansion in the sky My credentials are in perfect shape So please don't pass me by. He said you feel that.you have earned A place at Gods right hand When I myself am almost sure From his house you could be banned. I said I've always done my best To serve always on the square Now what I ask I feel is right And only just and fair. He said who gave to you the right to claim Heaven as your goal When after all your proper task Could well be shoveling coal. 0 0 Again I said I've always tried To be both kind and true I have just one more thing to say And then it's up to you. Ten years I've served this City I have tried to do it well St. Peter said, just step inside You've had your share of hell. Wallace E. Priority attention be devoted to design and reconstruction of the Gilbert St. - Highway 6 intersection. The accident experience at this corner warrants immediate action. 2. Acquisition of the right-of-way along Scott Blvd. would merely require Council acceptance of land offered gratis to the City by the owners. The Committee can see no reason to delay this decision. 3. Benton Street and Riverside Drive intersection should also be identified as a priority item. Traffic delay at this intersection is highly noticeable even during non -rush traffic times. It is our hope that the Council will concur in our recom- mendations and get underway on these projects immediately. Box 2358 Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Dear y14rAshby:y--4V'k At its regular meeting of October 4, 1977, the City Council received and placed on file your letter concerning street and highway improvements which the Chamber believes should have immediate attention. The reconstruction of the intersection of Gilbert Street and Highway 6 Bypass is scheduled in fiscal year 1979. However the Council soon will consider further rescheduling which might provide for earlier construction. Your second concern was acquisition of the right-of-way along Scott Boulevard. This is currently underway. Your third location, Benton Street and Riverside Drive intersection, in included in the budget for the current fiscal year. If you should have further comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
