UN Day is a time for the world's citizens to reaffirm their faith in the Charter's ideals of peace and human rights. UN Day is an occasion for us to renew our commitment to social and economic cooperation between nations. UN Day gives us all an opportunity to examine our involvement in the world's problems and their possible solutions, and WHEREAS, the United Nations is largely a product of the idealism and strength of the United States. Since the UN was formed 32 years ago, the world has clanged dramatically and the UN reflects these changes. But the ideals on which it was founded have not changed, nor have ours, and WHEREAS, the new direction of the United States reconfirms our confidence in these ideals and the noble purpose of the UN. The Carter Administration has already made a major commitment to the UN as a means through which the US can take constructive action for world harmony. The President is intent on restoring the moral leadership the US once had within the UN, thus reinforcing the UN's efforts to make and keep peace throughout the world, and WHEREAS, as we face today's pressing problems and tomorrow's crucial questions, we realize that their solution requires the cooperation of all nations. Problems such as nuclear proliferation, population growth, use of the seas, energy, food production, trade, and environmental protection affect us all and cannot be solved by one nation alone. The UN, as our only world-wide organization, offers us the best vehicle for finding the answers we all seek, .A 0 NOW, THEREFORE, I, Almy C.
