Tasks for August 28 meeting on selecting firms to interview
1. Decide on number of firms to interview from our rankings.
a. 3-5 firms?
b.Are there natural breaks in the ranking of firms?
c. How do we want to handle the firm where the lead consultant cannot meet on
September 15th?
2. Decide on interview of search firms format.
a. universal questions answered first then follow up questions/questions specific to their
RFQ submission?
b. one person ask universal questions then all others answer follow up questions vs.
rotate asking all questions?

3. Decide outcome of the September 15th interview day
a. Select firm after all interviews that day or set up another time to meet and decide.
b. Contracting phase with search firm. Who does it (Mayor, Committee, or entire
council) and by when?
Brainstormed list of questions to ask of all interviewed search firms.
1. Can you provide more details/specifics on how you recruit a diverse applicant pool?
2. What difficulties have you encountered while trying to recruit a diverse candidate pool
and how did you overcome them?
3. What guidelines do you typically recommend to a council that is looking for a
participatory search process that involves the public?
4. What training and/or experience has your consultant had that enables them to effectively
guide a participatory process with members of the public?
5. You will have an opportunity to learn what we want in our next City Manager. Prom
what you know of our community, what values/issues do you think are important to
Iowa City?
