HomeMy WebLinkAbout1978-05-23 Proclamation14ICROFILMED BY JORM MICROLAB CEDAR RAPIDS AND DES MOINES, IUwA CITY OF IOWA CITY CIVIC CENTER 410 E WASHINGTON ST IOWA CITY IOWA 52240 (319) 354.180 P R 0 C L A M A T I 0 11 WHEREAS, Americans past sixty-five years of age are an immeasur- able national asset, numbering nineteen million persons and comprising one in ten members of the entire popula- tion; and WHEREAS, Iowans are especially aware of the contributions made by those past sixty-five years of age, because Iowa has approximately 350,000 such residents and leads most all states in its percentage of older people; and WHEREAS, Iowa Citians recognize in many ways and through the activities of numerous public agencies and volunteer organizations that elderly persons living in Iowa City are an inexhaustable resource of the city -- able and eager to continue as full participants in our common life; and / WHEREAS, it is fitting that a particular time be set aside for special recognition of elder Iowa Citians -- through colmuunity programs, public honors, and marks of respect at worship services -- as an incentive for finding new ways to enrich their lives and enlarge their contribu- tions to society: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Vevera, Mayor of Iowa City, do proclaim the week of May 22nd, 1978 as OLDER AMERICAN'S WEEK in Iowa City, and I urge individuals, schools, religious bodies, fraternal and civic groups to ,join with public agencies in observing this special week and demonstrating year around concern for our Senior Citi;.cns.
