HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-04-21 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 4-8 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, 1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2015 to be Bicycle Month in Iowa City, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, and with friends and family to promote the benefits achieved from bicycling. *tr&/!" Mayor Signed in IowaCity, Iowa. this 21St day of April, 2 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the global community now faces extraordinary challenges, such as global health issues, food and water shortages, and economic struggles; and WHEREAS, all people, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment with economic growth; and WHEREAS, it is understood that the citizens must step forward and take action to create a green economy to combat the aforementioned global challenges; and WHEREAS, a green economy can be achieved on the individual level through educational efforts, public policy, and consumer activism campaigns; and WHEREAS, it is necessary to broaden and diversify this global movement to achieve maximum success; and WHEREAS, Earth Day is the beginning of a new year for environmental stewardship commitments, to implement sustainability efforts and commit to an Earth Day resolution(s); and WHEREAS, residents, businesses and institutions are encouraged to celebrate the Earth and commit to building a sustainable and green economy. The entire community has a role to play; and Whereas, Involving survivors helps victim service providers and criminal justice professionals understand the culture, values and expectations of under and un- served victims who seek assistance and justice; and Whereas, Iowa City is hereby dedicated to building partnerships with trusted sources of support, including community leaders, religious groups, schools, and other agencies to better reach and serve all victims of crime no matter their community.
