When your event requires the use of Iowa City
streets, there will be planning and activities that
your group will need to do before, during and
following your event. This brochure is intended
to help you find the appropriate assistance,
information and referrals to guide you through
this process.
In general, streets are the least desirable place
to hold public events. Diverting traffic safely
can be a major undertaking. Early in the plan-
ning stages you may want to ask:
· Can the event be accommodated
through the use of Iowa City’s trail system?
· Can your event be accommodated
by one of Iowa City’s parks? (See enclosed Trail
Guide brochure).

Planning the route for your event is very impor-
tant to the safety of all participants. Your event
may require special signage, barricades, equip-
ment, traffic control and notification to affected
agencies, for which your organization will be
responsible.
The “Citizen’s Guide to Use of Public Property”
can be obtained on-line at www.icgov.org/

When you apply for a permit, your information
will be sent to various city departments to
review for conflicts and make recommendations.
