Nellie Longsworth
In 1974, Nellie Longsworth - a preservation powerhouse with a
passion for getting the job done - founded Preservation Action
as the first national organization specifically dedicated to advocacy
for preservation on Capitol Hill. Nellie led the charge that helped
secure the first federal tax incentives for the rehabilitation of
historic buildings - and later, she labored tirelessly to gather
information on the tax-credit program's effectiveness and pushed
successfully for revisions to make it work even better. Nellie was
in the forefront of lobbying initiatives that amended the National
Historic Preservation Act to strengthen the partnership roles of
local governments and Native American tribes. And at a time
when preservation-friendly transportation policy seemed like an
impossible dream, Nellie's skill and tenacity were key factors in
the passage of the groundbreaking law known as ISTEA.
TARGEl:
Target is an upscale discounter that provides high-quality,
on-trend merchandise at attractive prices in clean, spacious, and
guest-friendly stores as well as online at Target. com. Since 1946,
Target has contributed 5 percent of its federally taxable income
to support communities where it does business. These funds
help support the arts, supplement educational efforts, and
strengthen families and communities. Today, this giving equates
to over $3 million a week.
Since her retirement as president of Preservation Action in
1998, she has taught preservation courses at institutions from
Harvard to the University of Hawaii, and has been a valued
mentor to a new generation of activists. As a consultant, she
fought off proposed changes that would have hobbled Section
106, one of preservation's most important safeguards.
Leader and partner. Pathfinder and consensus-builder. In a
career that spans more than 30 years, this remarkable woman
has taken on all of these roles, and played them well. But the
best way to describe Nellie Longsworth is simply to call her what
she is: a champion.
