WHEREAS, there is overwhelming evidence which indicates that
cigarette smoking is a major cause of lung cancer and
an important factor in other serious illnesses such as
heart disease and emphysema, and
WHEREAS, The Great American Smokeout has been conceived by the
American Cancer Society as encouragement to smokers to
give up cigarettes, and
WHEREAS, a nationwide campaign is being conducted to ask smokers
to take a day off from cigarettes on November 16, 1978,
