PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12.8 miJULUMIa, aiiu
WHEREAS, in our country, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for 15-24 year
olds, and is the 10th leading cause of death for people of all ages; and
WHEREAS, each person's death by suicide intimately affects at least six other
people, with over 200,000 newly bereaved each year; and
WHEREAS, the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition, dedicated to reducing
the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths and the pain of those affected by suicides of
loved ones, urges that we:
1. Recognize suicide as a significant public health problem in Iowa and
declare suicide prevention a statewide priority;
2. Support the development of accessible behavioral health services for all
99 counties of our state, implementing national best practices in reducing
suicide risk for people of all ages and backgrounds
3. Acknowledge that no single suicide prevention effort will be sufficient or
appropriate for all populations or communities; and
4. Encourage initiatives based on the goals and activities contained in the
National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, Zero Suicide of the National
Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, and the Johnson County Suicide
Prevention Coalition.
NOW, THERFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
September 7th through 13th, 2015, as
"Suicide Prevention Week"
in the city of Iowa City and urge citizens to learn how they can help because Suicide
Prevention Is Everyone's Business.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, emergencies and disasters can strike anywhere and at any time; and
WHEREAS, there are steps all citizens can take to be more prepared for any
emergency or disaster, including being aware of hazards, creating an emergency plan, and
building an emergency supply kit; and
WHEREAS, the Johnson County, Iowa, Homeland Security and Emergency
Management Agency and the National Weather Service continually stress the need and
importance of preparedness for severe weather through instruction in schools, broadcasts
over radio and television, distribution of safety and preparedness publications, and
helping local communities develop storm spotter networks; and
WHEREAS, investing in the preparedness of ourselves, our families, businesses and
communities can reduce fatalities and economic devastation in our communities and our
nation; and
WHEREAS, National Preparedness Month was originally created in response to the
tragic events of 9/11 to educate the public on how to prepare for emergencies.
Now, Therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the
month of September, 2015 as
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
in Iowa City and urge all citizens to take due notice of this occasion, and to give
appropriate attention to their necessary actions by preparing themselves for an emergency
or disaster.
