Unified States resulting in nearly 6,000 civilian .
deaths and over 130,000 serious civilian injuries,
and
311ha r,e a s , three out of four homes have at least one smoke
detector, but an estimated one-half are inoperative
because of worn or missing batteries, and
3Ah o ra a s , working smoke detectors double the chances of sur-
viving a fire, and
01ija tr,e a s , the national campaign is afficially sponsored by
the International Association of Fire Chiefs and
the American Burn Association, and
311h a ra a s , the designation of a special day to remind the
residents of Iowa City to change;the.batteries in
their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the
fall ritual of changing clacks, would greatly
diminishthe chance of this tragedg accuring in
Iowa Citg, and
3111te ra a s , the Iowa Citg Fire Department is dedicated to the
safety of life and property of our citizens from
the devastating effects of fire, and

their clacks from daylight savings time,
