illh e r e a s , forests cover about 737 million acres of
the United States and are essential to the
environmental quality of our nation, and
Whereas , thousands of plant and animal species,
including more than 100 threatened and
endangered species, depend upon forests
for their survival, and
Wh,e r Q a s , forests provide invaluable functions and
products including watershed protection,
wildlife habitat, recreation, lumber, and
paper products, and
MI -1e r e a s , human demands and pressures on the diverse
forest resources have resulted in defores-
tation and alteration of forest quality and
quantibg, and
Whereas , recent research suggests that acid rain and
other farms of air and water pollution are
negativelg impacting forests, and
0h,e r Q a s , the National Wildlife Federation has set
aside the week of march 20 through March 26,
1988, as a time to become more aware of
forest resources,
X33w , 1= h e r Q i= u r z , I, John McDonald, Magar of the
City of Tama City, Iowa, do hereby join the
National Wildlife Federation in proclaiming
March 20 - 26, 1988, as

in Iowa City and urge one and all to unite
in support of every activity that will
improve our understanding of forests and
the essential rule bhey play in our lives
and thus strongly affirm the vital impor-

help people cape with stresses of daily life,
as well as with problems such as child and
spouse abuse, phgsical, emotional and medical
disabilities, adjustment to aging, alcohol
and drug abuse, and
Wlre r e a s , social workers help clients within the enviran-
ment that is troubling them, such as the Eamilg,
school, workplace, or hospital, and
Whereas , social workers act as a liaison in linking
clients with appropriate community resources,
and
Whereas , social workers provide for the emotional and
social wellbeing of our community, and
3Ah e r e a s , march is being observed nationwide as Social
Mark month,

0h e r e a s , appraximately 600 athletes from the State of
Iowa will be coming to Iowa City an Friday
and Saturday, March 18 and 19, 1988, to take
part in the Iowa Special Olympirs State Basket -
hall and Gymnastics ¢ournament, and
lAih e r e a s , these athletes have worked hard in order to
qualify for the State competition, and all are
first place winners in area competition, and
31)h e r e a s , to make this event possible, local businesses,
organizations, ¢he University of Iowa, a 15 -
member steering committee, and over 300 uelun-
beers from Iama City and surrounding communities
have given time, food, muneg and other necessities,
and
Whereas , we want to commend the participants in the
Special Olympics since they are all champions
because theg have made the extra effort to
became involved and to be their best, and
we also want to commend the people whose efforts
have made this event possible,
NOW, I, John McDunald, Mayer of the City
of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim March 19,
1988, as

to gather at the Field House an March 19 to
share the athletes' spirit of accomplishment.
