In light of the fact that this, the third Monday in
January, being the second celebration of the establishment
of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a national
holiday, I wish to express recognition of this 'Modern
American Hero'. Our nation is evolving and educating
itself to the lessons Dr. King helped us to recognize.
There are still problems with racial harmony in the United
States as exemplified by two recent incidentsi one in the
Howard Beach section of Queens in New York City and another
in Forsyth County, Georgia just this past weekend. While
many communities in the United States have not settled upon
the most appropriate way to resolve 'The American Dilemma',
the problem of race in our society as it pertains to the
commemoration of our newest national holiday, I wish to
offer my sentiments to this body and to the Iowa City
community in the hope that the struggle will continue and
that through faith in our Creator and our fellow women and
men, we shall overcome.
