18HEREA.S, Dr. martin Luther King, Jr., through his work
and actions, exemplified the values of intelli-
genre, nnn-violence, peace and devotion to demo- i
i cratic change in striving far equalitg of
opportunitg for all of nor citizens, and
i M EREA9, a strong commitment bg all members of our societg
I to values that Dr. King represented is essential
to the continuation, preservation and improvement
of our social and political progress, and
I WMREA$, commemorative events have been scheduled in Iowa
City through January 31, 1987, to mark the annual
observance in honor of Dr. King, and
MREA$, it is appropriate that we set aside a time tn,
honor Dr. King's efforts and successes in his
work in human relations,
