P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, multiple sclerosis is a major neurological disease
of young adults with no known cause or cure, afflicting
two million people worldwide and striking 200 new
People each week...young people worldwide who are
starting their families and careers, and
WHEREAS, Students Against Multiple Sclerosis is a new national
collegiate movement which will increase the public's
awareness of multiple sclerosis while establishing
long-term fund raising support for the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society, and
WHEREAS, Students Against Multiple Sclerosis embodies the spirit
of voluntarism and charitable giving, and
WHEREAS, the students at the University of Iowa have dedicated
themselves to being part of the generation which can
eradicate multiple sclerosis through the involvement
of their campus, community and fellow citizens in edu-
cational and fund raising events throughout the month
of February 1986,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, do hereby join other mayors and public officials
nationwide by proclaiming the month of February 1986 as
BUST MS MONTH and call upon the people of Iowa City to
join me in supporting our students who are becoming
involved in a major national cause, the movement to
wipe out multiple sclerosis.

WHEREAS, the foundation of America's greatness is the
strength of its families, and
WHEREAS, the family is established on the marriage rela-
tionship between father and mother, and
WHEREAS, there is an urgent need to reverse the present
trend of separation and divorce that is sweeping
the country, and
WHEREAS, marriage should be viewed as a life-long commit-
ment between husband and wife, filled with mutual
respect and open communications, and
WHEREAS, it is our hope that the institution of marriage
once again be recognized as the basis of American
society,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of
Iowa City, do hereby proclaim February 9, 1986, as
"Marriage Day" in Iowa City, Iowa, and call upon
all citizens throughout Iowa City to support efforts
to promote the permanence and stability of marriage.
