P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the vocational rehabilitation of disabled and
handicapped people is a mission worthy of the
support of all citizens of Iowa City, and
WHEREAS, such rehabilitation requires comprehensive pro-
grams and services such as vocational assessment,
counseling, guidance, job training and placement,
conducted by professional staff, and
WHEREAS, the need for vocational rehabilitation services
continues to grow, and such services will have to
come from local communities, and
WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa is celebrating
21 years of success in providing these essential
services to disabled individuals in our community,
and
WHEREAS, May 4 - 10, 1986, has been set aside as Goodwill
Industries Week throughout the country to recog-
nize the contributions of Goodwill Industries to
improve the quality of life for citizens with dis-
abilities,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of
Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of
May 4 - 10, 1986, as GOODWILL INDUSTRIES WEEK in
Iowa City, and I urge all citizens to give their
continued support and recognition to the efforts
of this valuable organization.

WHEREAS, May 11 - 11, 1986, has been designated National
Hospital Week with the theme "Hospitals Make
Healthy Neighbors", and
WHEREAS, Mercy Hospital serves as the Iowa City health care
provider and as a regional acute care hospital with
wellness and health promotion services covering a
lifetime continuum, and
WHEREAS, Veterans' Administration Medical Center provides
quality tertiary health care for veterans in east-
ern Iowa and western Illinois through specialized
clinical, educational and medical research programs,
and
WHEREAS, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a
State resource for highly specialized patient care
services and health professions training, and
WHEREAS, these three institutions epitomize neighborliness in
their readiness to serve the people of this part of
the country and in their contribution to -our local
economy, and
WHEREAS, the community joins the nation in paying tribute to
the special kind of neighbors we have in the dedicated
staff members of the three hospitals as they provide
high quality health care that helps us all lead health-
ier lives,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of
Iowa City, hereby proclaim the week of May 11 - 17,
1986, as IOWA CITY HOSPITAL WEEK, and urge all citizens
to give special recognition to our healthy neighbors -
Mercy Hospital, Veterans' Administration Medical Center,
and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

WHEREAS, May 4 - 10, 1986, has been designated by the
Sunrise Optimist Club of Iowa City as Respect for
Law Week, and
WHEREAS, the Sunrise Optimist Club and other Optimist Clubs
and their members continue to sponsor and participate
in programs encouraging support of law enforcement
and good citizenship, and
WHEREAS, all citizens of Iowa City and Johnson County can be
secure in the knowledge that their local law enforce -
men t agencies are diligently working to ensure the
protection of the rights of everyone, and
WHEREAS, those citizens who value liberty recognize law en-
forcement, the judiciary, prosecution, defense and
correction as integral portions of the process of
justice that contribute to our respect for law,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of

faith and trust, and
WHEREAS, the role of Police Officer is to respect and
protect the rights of all to liberty, equality,

WHEREAS, the duties of the Police Officer are to serve the
citizens, safeguard lives and property, and to be
constantly mindful of the welfare of others, and

are often exposed to great hazards and life-

National Nursing Home Week, and
WHEREAS, the purpose of this week is to honor "life
achievements" of the elderly of our community
at the Iowa City Care Center and at all nursing

WHEREAS, by this proclamation we wish to honor those
"history makers" and their achievements and to
express our gratitude for their contributions
to our heritage,

areas, and
WHEREAS, twenty years have passed since passage of the National
Historic Preservation Act which created the National
Register of Historic Places as we know it today, and
WHEREAS, historic places remind us, young and old, of the basic
values like faith, family, hard work, neighborhood and
freedom that make America great, and
WHEREAS, National Historic Preservation Week 1986 provides a
splendid opportunity for Americans of all ages to
reflect on the contributions the past makes to
today, and to take renewed pride in preserving our
heritage for future generations, and
WHEREAS, CELEBRATE HISTORIC PLACES - OUR PAST FOR OUR FUTURE
is the theme for Preservation Week 1986, co-sponsored
by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and
the Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission,

WHEREAS, the Kodak Liberty Ride Festival is the largest
recreational bicycling event and musical festival
of its kind ever attempted in the United States
and will bring the citizens of the City of Iowa
City together with the citizens of more than 100
other cities nationwide in an event that will sup-
port the restoration of the Statue of Liberty/
Ellis Island National Monument, one'of our greatest
national symbols, and
WHEREAS, the Kodak Liberty Ride Festival will bring nation-
wide recognition to the City of Iowa City as its
citizens join as many as 850,000 Americans in this
significant, patriotic cause, and
WHEREAS, the Kodak Liberty Ride Festival is a wholesome, fun -
filled event for all ages, and families are the
foundation of our City and our Nation, and
WHEREAS, bicycle riding, an integral part of the Kodak
Liberty Ride Festival, is a tremendously popular
sport among more than 75 million citizens in our
City and our Nation, and one which promotes healthy
bodies and family togetherness, which are crucial
to our future growth and prosperity as a nation, and
WHEREAS, the month of May has been celebrated as American
Bicycle Month for the past 30 years,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Ambrisco, Mayor of the City of
Iowa City, do hereby proclaim May 18, 1986, as KODAK
LIBERTY RIDE FESTIVAL DAY" in the City of Iowa City.
