IOWA 62246 i August 6, 1986 Honorable Mayor and City Council City of Iowa City Civic Center 410 E Washington Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Re: Gun Control Ordinance Dear Mayor Ambrisco and Members of the Council: The recent tragedy in downtown Iowa City has caused me to reflect on the dangers of hand guns in our community. It is because ofthisconcern that I am writing this letter to ask the City Council of Iowa City to consider the adoption of a gun control ordinance. I would ask that you consider a draft of such an ordinance after a ..legal opinion from the City Attorney's Office and after holding a public hearing or public hearings on the matter. I recognize that such an ordinance is not a cure all but would only be a small step in the right direction. This letter comes from me after much thought over the years on this matter. I believe my credentials as a conservative on many matters are well known so this letter cannot be regarded as coming from one who advocates radical change constantly. I point this out only to emphasize that this letter comes as the result of deep concern for the protection of People from injury caused by handguns. I also repeat that I know such an ordinance is no miracle worker, but only a move in the right direction but one I believe the City of Iowa City as a forward looking community ought to take. Recognizing that one who suggests these kinds of things may be volunteering, I would also be glad to serve on a committee delegated the task of looking into this kind of ordinance, if the council wishes.
